Just doing a little emotional gymnastics, imagining for a minute what it might feel like to have one of my photos used by someone well known

Im selling upwards of half a dozen photos every day now, best day in June was 11 sales.

But the world is so big. I do very little reading. And I dont/cant find out who is buying my photos. Wondering if I'll ever see any of my pics in a magazine or on a website which doesnt belong to one of my friends. The odds of a spotted are probably a billion to one

Has anyone else had any luck and spotted or heard about any pics they've taken being used anywhere, whether you were asked for permission, sold a pic, etc?

Thinking of doing some work for a local charity next year, and flying into Europe to help with food distribution, and to document the good work they are doing helping impoverished orphans and homeless people who live on the street, which should be a good all round experience and opportunity to possibnly get some compelling shots. The odds of me selling a photo to Time magazine are also about a billion to one but you never know

Let's see now - must be better odds than the lottery?

...and (as they say) "You've Got To Be In It To Win It"

So......

....the answer is just keep trying! Somebody's photos have to be in it!

I had a few of my Wembley pics in a big centrefold in The Sun which I was quite chuffed about. Loads of them end up in trade magazines/information packs etc - it still gives me a buzz when someone sends me a courtesy copy though

If you buy a jigsaw from Lincoln Cathedral it's my pic :smug:

Shutterstock (nearly all sell here)
http://submit.shutterstock.com/?ref=6

Bigstock
www.bigstockphoto.com/?refid=e8hSXFgQq1

DREAMSTIME
www.dreamstime.com/res164519

Shutterstock is where most of the sales are. 7/10 of your first 10 images need to be accepted in order to submit more photos (or your account is suspended for 3 months) Email me if you have questions, if you're interested in starting Im more than happy to help you with submissions, keywording, do's, dont's, etc.

Bigstock accepts most images, is far less fussy, but sales are slow.

Dreamstime is somewhere in the middle.

Which pic?? I have absolutely no clue as to who is buying or using my pics, hence Im wondering whether I'll ever one day stumble upon one. My best seller is this one

which sold twice yesterday, and has sold 20 times in the last month.

Bob, if you don't mind me asking, how much do they sell for on Shutterstock? Is it mainly Royalty Free stuff or do you sell any landscapes etc too? Do you have a link to your 'album' on there?

here is my humble gallery:
www.shutterstock.com/gallery-64427p1.html

People buy landscape, flower, animal and nature photos, but food and business shots sell better. However, landscape photos have the longest shelf life as they are timeless.

Look at the magazines, newspapers, and web pages around you. People need images of everything, which includes snapshots of post boxes, shopping trolleys, ornaments etc. You could probably get 50 stock shots by isolating and shooting the clutter on your desk. Or 50 items from the garage. Or the tool shed. Or living room. And these random objects might sell just as well or better than landscapes. Chances are they would, as every man and his dog has a collection of landscape shots.

Ive sold 5 images so far today, and all have been food shots, with the exception of one image which was a closeup of a fire. Shutterstock pays less than any other stock site (0.25c per image) but once the photos are online they will continue to earn you money. It remains to be seen, but if the sandwich I made/shot earned me $5 this month, in theory it might earn me $50 by the end of the year. And maybe hundreds of dollars by the time Im an old man

Thats not to say you have to shoot food though. Check out peoples galleries in the forums. There are some strange photos online! Vector art is popular, and many people make good money every month just selling vector images they created in photoshop, ie backgrounds, clipart, etc.

Your images are royalty free unless you assign royalties to them, depends on the stock site.

that makes it sound as if your photos of food will eventually show dried bread, curled up at the edges, with wilting lettuce and a green mould on the ham

Plenty of crap shots too. Which have nothing at all special about them at all. Im probably 'happy' with 1 in 20 of the photos online, but they all sell which is the main thing.

One of the regional Ferarri Owners Clubs asked to use one of my photos of a Fezza from the Tunnel Run at the end of last year (the big one that started at Chelsea Bridge rather than Clacketts earlier this year). Was only an emailed PDF newsletter and it wasn't a particularly good photo, but I was well chuffed.

Only have 5 photos with iStock at the moment and I've sold 12 copies in total (don't know the combination of which has sold how many off hand) and I keep meaning to put together an Alamy disc as well. I've not really ventured into the realms of stock photography deliberately yet - it's been stuff I've shot for other reasons, such as the coastline of Arran, a Harrier landing at RIAT, a penguin at Marwell etc.

Really must get off my arse - ta for the other stock links there.
www.butlerphotography.co.uk is my sort of portfolio site. For everything else I just use Flickr to be honest.
