Old photo of the Carters
Discussion
We were talking (on another thread) about age.
Although I'm still in my 40s, my dad was born in 1908 and he was the youngest of 13(!) - who lived in a one bedroom house (!!) in the east end of London.
His dad (who was from a long line of 'horse and carters') is in the pic below.
I love this photo - taken 1890's (we think) because of:
how they have dressed up for the pic! (probably a wedding perhaps)
how they have tried to make the back yard pretty by hanging up some sheets!
how bloody ugly they all are (no change there then).
My Grandad is the one in the back row holding the child with the wierd candy floss stuck to her head.
...I mean - how bizarre are this lot?
Anyone else?

Must say, your Grandad and the chap to his right probably got the best genes when they were handing them out. The rest look like clones of each other! ...I mean - how bizarre are this lot?
I have loads, have spent the past couple of months collecting old pictures from the grandparents and have been scanning them all in. Here are a select few, I just love old photos.
My family on my mums side
left my nans brother, right her parents and her eldest sister.
My great great nan and her siser
My great grandparents and two of their children, taken approx 1910

Wearing a wig like that, the child looks like she may be related to Elton John

Probably is elton john
2nd in from the right at the back - "wanna buy a dog mate?"
We had a guest stay with us last week who professed to an interest in photography. He spent many hours describing his love of black and white over colour etc. Whilst out on a walk he got his camera out and proceeded according to the following script.
Oooo look a tree
click
Ooooo look a field
click
Oooo look sky
click
Oooo look another tree

When we got back to the house he brought out some of his photo's, a real shame to have to sit there feigning interest in just a heap of snaps. No composure, no subject, no story behind them, just kind of meaningless pictures
I think now adays we take photographs so much for granted, it's almost a shame. In those days it would have been a very very special (and likely expensive) occaison. You can really see it, all these pictures are filled to the brim with dignity, composure, passion, importance... everything that makes a great picture great.

I bet the chap that took the Carters was wishing he had a copy of Photoshop ...
There is something about old snap shots that, with time passed and gravitas added, gives them a meaning and a presence that I doubt they had at the time. Or maybe it is just that, formal or informal, most shots needed to be posed if people were to think of them as successful pictures of people. The degree of formality was expected.
Which of today's photos will stand the test of time in the equivalent way?

This guy agrees with you -

I also agree, I know of several people who don't appreciate what they're seeing as they're always thinking about how to photograph it.
Anyway, was anyone else expecting to see Charly in GetCarter's old pics?
OK, sorry about the quality.... these are scans of scans of scans (must track down originals from my folks)
At the turn of the 20th century my great grandfather was stationed at Fort Rowner on the South Coast. He and his mates seemed to have a bit of a penchant for photography. I guess they sent the (posed) snaps back home to family and loved ones.
First one shows my GGF seated in the middle at the front, holding a bugle, with a jack russell (mascot) by his feet. Interestingly he appears to have painted the shoes he's wearing with white paint...
GGF not in this pic, but just look at the age of some of those lads. They bearly look out of shorts...
The Fort had a skittle alley. Here are the lads relaxing. My GGF is the one third from right pouring the chaps drinks from a big white jug. I like to think that it is Pimms!!...
And here is GGF (on left) playing hockey. Excellent shorts, sticks and boots!!...
Showing off the (tiddly) catch from a day's fishing....
Inside the huts, bunks were dressed up with homely reminders.....
Dinnertime. GGF is wearing apron! I find it interesting that evryone around the table has managed to look at the camera....
The Cricket team. GGF is on left holding the bat. Not sure what the creature is that the man is holding behind him. Team mascots seemed to be a big thing though....
The Card game. This picture is one of my favourites. The original is just great. Everyone is drinking stout. Check out the guy with the newspaper....
In this one GGF is the central chap on one knee behind the cannon. Very cool....
GGF is on the right in this one. He seems to be wearing espadrilles! Check out the grip enhancers on the floor....
and this one speaks for itself...... woollen boxing pants!
Finally, a later photo of my grandfather who I think was in the military police. He's the one at the back. You'll see that he is wearing a pair of waders. Gran told me once that he didn't like getting wet legs on long rides. Excellent!
Hope you enjoyed them.

cy88 they are fantastic
Not sure who this is a picture of, but it was in the pile of ones I scanned from Fish's granny
Same with this one
The following ones are of my grandad, so not very old.
Apart from this one, which my grandad took, as he was in to his photography
Not a clear picture, but you get the gist, my grandad is the one with the arrow pointing at him
My grandad bottom far right
This is the only picture of my GG in his uniform
