Remote Release extensions
Discussion
I currently got a 20D and use the R80 N3 remote but this is not long enough for how I would like to use the camera. I've found the 10m Canon extension online but it is out of stock at the place with the best price and next best price have it at £47 including delivery which seems an awful lot of money for a 10m length of cable.
What I was wondering is, is that cable my only option for having a longer remote cable and hence will I have to either wait or bite the bullet or is another option available?
Can anyone help me?

I took my existing one - cut it and then put a piece of Cat 5 cable between the two ends. It's been run upto 30 odd metres away and works well. All you need is three core cable and a half dozen of those chocolate block connectors
That's a good (and brave !) trick. An alternative to the Cat 5 would be to use 1/8" stereo jacks and cable. It would be slightly less bulky but the plugs don't lock into the sockets like Cat 5.
There is a little tutorial on this here
Life would be easier if you could buy Canon N3 sockets but I haven't seen them (or clones) anywhere.
Excellent, that might be worth doing as I could then have various different length extensions for different jobs.
I did wonder about doing something along those lines but suspected that the cabling inside was probably more complicated than just a pair of cables and an earth.
Cheers for the tips and the link

Not quite sure why that guy changed the plug on his cable release, they look like standard 2.5mm plugs and sockets to me. I plugged in the headphones that came with my mobile phone (looks like a normal 2.5mm plug, can't find a real one about) into the cable release socket of my camera and it seems to like it. In fact it liked it so much it took a picture of the lens cap
(the annoying thing is I have 2 bodies, one with film in and one without, guess which one I plugged the headphones into...). Looking round on the Maplin site I can't seem to find standard stereo cable without connectors, anyone know the correct term for streeo connection wire?

Now look at the second and third photos on that tutorial...you'll see the part that goes on the camera is nothing like a jack plug.

Sorry, my mistake. It is a like a jack plug on my camera though.
It's down to the two different Canon connectors, the N3 and the E3. You can find the pin-out here.
The higher end cameras use the 3-pin locking N3, the others use the E3 1/8" jack.
There's also a T3 connector...
The world of RS is your friend . . . not the cheapest out there but one of the best . . .

seach for keyword "2.5mm jack"
I think they still deal with the public online, but if not I have an account so if there's anything you need I can oblige . . .
