Fancy one of these new JVC Everios, the top spec one that does 37 hours video and 5 million pixel stills. This is to replaces a 4 million pixel Canon Ixus 400 camera and an extremely elderly Sony video camera that uses tape. I like the fact that it does all in one and its so compact.

But Jeez! they're expensive.

What else is there available?

HDD camcorders store in compressed MPEG which may make editing a bit problematic (compression artifacts) Best wait until the next generation when, hopefully, they can resolve that.

BG, I am going to transfer this to the Photo and Video forum where you will get more enlightened responses

Listen smartarse, I know how to use a search engine, and I have had a look around the shops at other technology, mini DVD for example. But as PH is the font of all knowledge (with the exception of your good self, unless I wanted to know about conveyor belts (although not in the aeroplane sense, even though there is a connection) and which planet the Will Self deity was on, that is you isnt it?). Anyway, pixels to ya, with luminex on.

I was just about to say "WTF?!" at 37 hours video then I realised it said HDD and not HD camcorders. Still, how big are the hard drives in these? An Hour of footage from my DV cam takes about 10Gb uncompressed. Do they encode to mpeg4 or something?

And I thought you knew.

Pat H is Will Self

don't tell him.........he doesn't know yet

And a simple 'yes' would have sufficed. Those aneurisms can be tricky to fix

The JVC's are typically 30GB hard drives. That's 14 hours of "high quality" mode recording.

They are useless for in-car/track footage as the car vibration freaks them out. Although you can record more than an hour onto an SD memory card (I use 4GB cards).

I don't find the MPEG recording format a big problem - sure it's not as high qual. as DV, but it's fine for non-professional use.

Just ordered a JVC Everio GZ-MG505, now suffering from buyers remorse as it a lot of money and no doubt it will be cheap as chips in 18 months time

Will let you know what I think when it arrives and I have had a play.
