Had an interesting experience recently, the amount of space supposedly available on my portable storage box didn't agree with what I thought should be there. It displayed 67GB free when I thought it should be 80GB. Available space had been going down down for a while despite the fact that I was deleting all images once I had transferred them to my PC - the displayed figure wasn't going back up after a delete. It didn't happen when I first had it, but recalled the problem started soon after I used it to move a few files from my PC to a friend's and vice versa. Originally it had only been connected to my PC. Went into My Computer, right clicked on the disk drive icon, selected Properties then the Tools tab and checked for errors. Took the opportunity to do a full scan - which took a couple of hours ! Worth it, as when finished the display returned to what was expected and I am confident that there are no bad sectors on the disk to corrupt any images.

Would recommend others do the same occasionally.

If you untick the 'automatically fix errors' it will prompt you each time it finds an error, so you can see what was wrong. Most likely just lost file fragments, but useful to know what's wrong and whether it's caused by something you're doing, or genuinely a hardware problem.
