Just placed the official order with my friend in Hong Kong for a Nikon 70-200mmf 2.8G AFS VR ED

Can't wait to have a play with it now! Should be getting her on Thursday.

Question is, I'm going to ask him to get me a teleconverter too, but do I go for the 1.4x or the 1.7x?

1.4 gives 280mm af f3.5ish (i think)

1.7 dives 340mm at f4 (again I think this is right)

I am sure that the 1.7, gives the more useable range as 340mm if far better than 280 for many things, but is the loss of the extra stop going to be an issue?

All comments greatly appreciated as I need to give him the order onight so he can go and buy it tomorrow lunch time. (they are 8 hours ahead)

Regards,
Greg

ps. Also, BLACK or GREY ?? Black looks cooler but grey looks more "pro"

Reading an article in Am photog mag.. and the crop-resize in photoshop were better quality than with a teleconverter.. just a thought.

Thats a very good point and one I had not thought of Flameop!

I guess you're right. Simply cropping the shot at 200mm would be better then the quality you would get by using an un-cropped shot taken with the 1.7 x converter on it.

Thanks.

something to do with the teleconverter adding to the CA's etc.. x.4 for a 1.4 where as a simple blow up you still have the basic shot. The teleconverter magnifies the shot.. it also magnifies the bad stuff about the lens as well... though the lens you after isn't exactly a bad one ;-)

maybe see if you can borrow one and do a test?
