Anyone care to explain to me why I might want to spend 700 quid more (ish) on a 1D (N or otherwise) than a 5? They need to reasonably compelling reasons - I really need to justify the extra.

Faster fps rate...faster buffer...don't need to buy extra booster pack...can add a 30 sec "sound bite" to each image...it takes two (1 CF & 1 SD) memory cards at the same time (either double the memory, or Raw onto one and Jpgs onto the other. x1.3 crop factor better for shooting with longer lenses. HTH.

Edited to add:- 1D is made of magnesium, 5 is mde of plastic, this sums up the experience of using both.

Martin.

PS - I LOVE MY 1DmkII N !

5D has the sensor from the 1Ds

the 1DMk2N has the same focus system as the 1DS

higher rez images or faster performance.. depends what your shooting mainly suppose...

Shame the 10-22's EF-S though...that would have probably swung me to getting the 5D and that.

Supposedly the sensor in the 5D is 'better' than that of the 1Ds':

Michael Reichmann:
"I also am eagerly awaiting the next generation Canon 1 series. The reason? The 5D. The 5D's image quality (other than absolute file size) is a noticeable step up from that of the 1Ds MKII. Images are cleaner and have lower noise at all ISOs. Assuming that this new sensor or image processing capability appears in future bodies, a 1 series with a 22MP sensor of this quality should be something. Let's hope that Canon gives us some better lenses as well while they're at it."

Build quality. the 1DMK2 is built like a tank. The 5D is more 20/30D like.

Mk2 has bigger buffer, faster frame rate, weather sealing with certain lenses.

The 5D was intended as a cheaper studio / landscape cam for those who wanted a 1DS but were scared off by a 4.5K price tag. The 1DMK2 is the best sports/action/photojournalism cam available.

I was close to getting a 5D until my transmission blew up.

I love my MkII. It's definitely worth the extra. Once you've hold the 1 Series, you just wouldn't like to use anything else.

Confused.. them 1D Mk2 is what 8.3mp? same sensor as the 20/30 D then? or is it a diff crop? not full frame like 1DS or is full frame just 8.3MP. So is the image quality better? :-/

Sensor size on a 1D MK II is halfway between full frame, ie 5D, 1DS and an aps sized sensor such as in 20/30D. The magnification factor is 1.3x rather than 1.6x that a 20/30D has so in effect a 400mm lens will become 520mm on a 1D MK II or 640mm on a 20/30D...

I currently have a 1D MK I and will be facing a similar dilemma but chances are I'll go for the 1D MK IIN or even save a bit more for the 1DS MKII...

Why'd you need 10mm on a full frame camera...

1dIIn is for sport/fast shooting situations, the 5D being full frame you'll get better DOF control, realy depends what you want to shoot, I personaly wouldnt have any use for the super fast system the 1DIIn has.

Seems to me to be quite clear that both bodies are required.

Keep saving?
