I am thinking of buying a Nikon D50, is there anything else i should be looking at around that price.
All comments will be welcome as i am moving from a OM10 35mm into the digital world and don't have much idea of what to look for.

The only direct competition i considered was the Canon 350D. Both seem pretty similar - but there might be a couple of little differences that clinch it one way or the other for you - depending on what you want to do. In the end the Nikon won me over as it felt much much better in my hands. You really can't choose without holding them so get yourself to a camera shop after doing some research.

Suggest you digest everything on here and also www.dpreview.com is very useful.

Agree with that. I considered a Canon, but having handled one it just didn't feel 'right' in my hands.
D50 is fine as an entry digital SLR, try the D70S, if you can stretch the extra pennies.

Do you not have some Olympus lenses that you want to keep?

(Don't know (for Olympus) how compatable they are with the dSLRs, but that was my deciding factor when choosing to go digital!)

If you have a load of lenses already then it might be worth considering Beanos advice.

I myself were starting from scratch and was between the Canon and Nikon.

I had a play with both and the Nikon won hands down. It just felt better, easier to hold, more sturdier, etc.

I've not looked back since.

i never actually chose what camera to have as a starter simply because i was lucky enough to be able to borrow my uncles D70s for an extended period of time (coming up to a year now. i really should look into getting a camera of my own).

but i really do like the nikon, and although i have never tried a D50, i can imagine that it would be the sort of thing i would want from a starter camera.
especially if you can get them for less than £400 as per:

For Olympus, from everything I've read it seems like older lenses are not compatible with the new DSLR system.

I'll second that, and add that in addition to the D70's being a better body (which is only minorly significant), it comes with a much better kit lens. And prices for D70's have been coming down lately...
