Only problem is that I don't get my hands on it till tomorrow! Its at my mates house who's flight from Hong Knog was delayed and its too late to go over and get it now!

How long till sleep time? then then then then

Very sexy bit of kit that. Having bought an 80-400VR t'other month and not used it in anger yet, I've called a moratorium on photography purchases.

Otherwise this would be well up on my list I reckon.

All you need now is a decent camera to go with it and some lessons on how to use them.

Friend of mine (Radiohead, Rob) had one of those on trial prior to purchase when we went to Marwell last weekend. He was well chuffed with it

His Flickr set from the day is here : www.flickr.com/photos/guycollier/sets/72157594199965646/

I don't recall him swapping lenses at all so I guess they were all with that one. I'm the one in the backwards cap grimacing through the viewfinder, not the one with the dodgy hat

And yes, the best lenses are white

he'd loose autofocus if he attached it to a canon

When you say white, do you mean the grey ones they do?

My mate called the other day and asked if I wanted it in grey or black. While I know that grey makes you look more like a pro, I felt that that was not a good idea for me, as I am still rubbish and using my kit.

Should I have gone for grey? I think black looks lovely and smart, and it matches all my other kit, and my oven and hob, and my motorbike and car and tv...................

Don't worry Greg, I chose black over grey as well for my 28-70 - you wouldn't want anyone to think you were using a Canon now would you!

That, dear sir, is a STUNNING lens. One of Nikon's very very very best. Enjoy. I don't use mine enough (like once in the past year!).

Wow! What can I say!

1) Its bigger than I thought! Having only played with one for a few minutes about a year ago, I knew I wanted one but forgot just how chunky it is! New bag will be bought tomorrow!

2) How crispy and bright are the shots!? Very very very!!!

)3 I shot a few off in a dull church this evening of the groom for Saturdays wedding pracacing at the altar and the shots are great! I have never used another lens that could have taken anything useable in dim light like that.

4) VR seems effective but have not really had a chance to try it out yet. Tried shooting some cars at about 40 mph earlier but even at f2.8 the shutter wanted 1/60th and with VR on it was all a blur. Hope its not bust as getting it back to HK won't be easy!

Pics and more to come, but I can say that I am now a happy boy!

Kit now.

I wish they'ed make something like an 17-70 f2.8 VR or iis that too tricky to produce. The 28mm on a 1.5 crop camera is not a hugely useful range surely?

Guess a 17-55 f2.8 would be good but a 17-70 would bridge the gap perfectally!

Hmm wasn't someone in this forum building a 10-1000mm f/1.0 VR in their garage?

I debated that a lot, but found from looking through my pics that I shot at 35mm - 70mm much more than down at 18mm. When I was down at 18mm I was always cursing the fact that it wasn't wide enough.

That coupled with the fact I didn't get on with my 18-70 and found it very soft wide open, (ie most of the time), I figured my money was much better spent on a decent lens I would use all the time - and so the 28-70 it was. Haven't looked back, I reckon it's probably the best zoom lens Nikon make below 200mm

I have the sigma for wide angle stuff, so all I am really missing is 8mm of range, hardly the end of the world.

I'd love to see a 1000mm f1 - the diameter of the lens at its widest point would be 1 metre. Awesome.

You'd remove the smirk from all those white L-series Canon wielders at sports days.
