Took the day off on Friday to go an play camera... and having scanned an eye over the photos taken there have been a few occasions when I've suffered from glare.

Now I understand a lens hood would help resolve this... but I've seen loads of different types (rubber folding ones, plastic ones - in various shapes), so how do I know which is best for me?

Using a 300D with 75-300 IS lens...

Somtimes the hoods made for the lenses are rated, other times not. I always shoot with my hood as it helps protect the lens from accidental damage.

Bloody annoying things lens hoods. I've got three 77mm Lenses, and all three require a different lens hood, meaning you can't just carry one with you.

Obviously, as they are designed for specifc focal length, not filter size.

BTW, I use them most of the time, and it is best to get the one specific to the lens. Canon ones are more expensive but they are well-made.

That's the one you can be bothered to carry around with you and fit to your lens. I use a bellows style one that clips in to my Cokin P filter holder. SpeedGraphic do one for £32 or Cokin do one for £120. You can adjust it to fit pretty much whatever lens you're shooting with at the time and they are effective at increasing contrast even when you can't see any major evidence of flare through the viewfinder.

Can't you reverse the lens hood so it stays over the lens when not in use? That's what I do with my hoods when not in use...

I'm not posting in this thread any more as I'm embarassed about not getting the frankly obvious focal length thing.

Although I'm certain the hoods on my 28-70 and 80-400 are almost exactly the same size.

Re: reversing the hoods - I'm already about 60% over the capacity of my camera bag, and hoods just make matters worse.

If I could find anywhere local where I could get my hands on a billingham bag I'd be a happy man, I want to touch it before I spend £100+ on a bag.

I was doing that for a bit, until one day the lens cap somehow came off in the car. I now keep the hood on at all times, even when not in use. Even if it does mean people (like yesterday for example) make snide remarks about me being a pap.

Funny how that happens... short of stapling it to the bag, don't think I'll get any more in mine...

I found a website that let you download PDF's to print out and cutout to make paper lens hoods, almost every lens was on their list too (some required A3 paper), OK not exactly long term solutions but I think one of canons lens hoods is £3-400 for the big primes...

Are the rubber ones any good?
I find the one on my 70-300 is so big it's a nightmare to twist the polariser and it won't fit over the Jessops lens cap I bought either...

Hmm Nikon lens caps don't come off in cars...

Nikon caps go on even when the lens hood is in place!

(Well they do on my 20mm, 45mm, 85mm and 180mm anyway....)

Paper lens hood?
£400 lens hood!?
Not sure which idea is more laughable

£400 buys a £120mph car.
Or pays for a 10 day photography holiday for 1 in europe.
£400 buys enough gerbil food to feed 8 gerbils for 25 years (for those who were wondering, but were stumped with the £/day consumption ratio. I have a squashed peas and unsalted peanut algorythm for any disbelievers in our ranks...)
