make pictures look lighter than they actually are. Say I have a picture open in either of these programs, and I get it just right, the brightness etc, save it, open it in Windows Picture and Fax Viewer or put it on the internet, and it's darker than I wanted it to be. Does anyone else notice this, or is there a reason for this? It's quite frustrating for me not to be able to see what the end result will look like until after I've saved it and opened it in another program.

i think it is actually because everything else makes it look darker, not that photoshop makes it look lighter.
i may be wrong, but i think that photoshop is much truer to the correct pixel colour than most windows programs, hence the problem.

make sure you convert your image to Profile SRGB before exporting.. Unless you application can read colour profiles like photoshop it won't display a Adobe rgb image correctly..

Right, I tried to save it in srgb but I still got the same problem. I'm sure you all know what I mean but here's a screenshot anyway. I just saved the picture in RawShooter and opened it in Picture & Fax viewer..

Windows Picture and Fax Viewer is awful, its a really basic picture viewer and doesnt do colour management. Photoshop etc are showing you a true representation of the image in RGB. If you dont want to view your pictures in Photoshop then download a decent picture viewer.
