Ok bit confused here...Exposure Question.
Discussion
Ok.. when you do exposure compensation.. what gets altered ?
Say I can't get a fast enough shutter speed for correct exposure.. I set my compensation +2 stop.. coz it showed -2 .. what does the camera alter?
I thought the 2 values are Shutter speed and apeture. So if you alter the exposure compensation -/+ what changes?
Say I have F22 and the shutter speed is 1/125 thats the correct exposure in ADEP mode. if I go to manual, lower the shutter speed by -2 stops.. then set compensation to +2 ... what have I done? will the exposure still be correct..
I mean whats the point in setting your exposure compensation to +2.. just up your shutter speed 2 stops no?
thats about as clear as mud :-/ I think I mean.. If I set 1/125th as the shutter speed.. and dial in +2EV compensation.. wil the camera up the shutter speed..but show 1/125th in exif +2ev ? as in it really shot at 1/500th ?

Yup - that's it. It's just the flexibility of allowing you to 'recalibrate' your camera's meter, so that when it's meter reads 'spot-on' - you know it's really plus2EV or whatever you've set it to. It would seem to be about the psychology of using your camera's meter and 'listening' to it when it reads 'spot-on'.
I use print film - and it's known that these like to be slightly over-exposed - which also gives a greater dynamic range - precisely because they have a lot of leeway at the over-exposure end. So whenever I meter for a scene, I regard when the needle says 'plus2', or 'plus1' as 'just right' - whereas I could equally like you say set the exposure compensation so that when the needle's in the middle - I know that really it's slightly over-exposed.
Like you say - it is indeed the same difference.
(And the same goes for flash - you might find that a neutral exposure compensation leads to too-dark images - so you just set this higher, so the flash makes things brighter)
Hope that helps!

kinda
so when I shoot in AV.. 2.8 .. and it gives 1/125th SS.. if I then dial in -2EV .. what does the camera do ? does it actually psyically shoot 1/500th ? then say 1/125th 2.8 -2EV ?
If thats true.. what happens when I get to the fastest shutter speed 1/8000 and ask it for -2EV ? it can't go any faster to let less light in ?:-/ does it then up the ISO ? automatically? I'd just like to know what it's doing in the background to do the less/more light trick..

The camera will shoot at what it is saying it is shooting at. i.e if it says 1/500 then that is what it is. If you look at the meter settings whilst you adjust it, the settings will change as you alter the amount of over and under exposure, all it is doing is adjusting from what it "thought" was the original correct exposure. Which value changes, as has been said, is down to what mode you are shooting in and what can physically be altered, if in aperture priority then it will keep that constant for as long as it can and vice versa with shutter priority, when it reaches the max of either it should revert to altering the other settings. Am not aware of any camera actually changing the iso setting at the extremes but might be wrong.
