AVI to DVD... Any easy way ?

Hi all, I need some advice.
I've recentely been offeres a Panasonic mini DV. The picture quality is good and I'm very pleased with the product but the management software that came with the thing is unfathomable... I know I can use other and less complicated softwares but before I set about buying I would need your opinions as to which to go for.
I am not a computer wizard, so the simpler the better. All I want to do is transfer my movies onto my PC (usually gives me an AVI file) and then burn them onto a CD so I can play them on a DVD player. Maybe with some light editting but it's not essential.
By the way, is it possible to copy 60mn onto an 80mb disc? (shows how much I know about the stuff hey!!!)
