I have a canon 300d which is used for a bit of everything , im looking for a flash to assist with mainly indoor work ie badly lit parties/functions, it is likely to be used in an auto mode for now until my knowledge increases, am i going to massively benefit from a 580 compared to a 430 or should i keep the extra £75.oo

for normal use the 430ex is the choice. 580 has more functions but do you need them? you can get teh 430ex for £169

I got a 580 when I had to do a friend's wedding, it's a cracking flash but the main difference with the 430 is going to be range. I would expect the 430 would be fine, it has most of the features of the 580 that you are ever likely to use unless really into advanced flash photography.
