So, they still haven't increased the burst rate to more than 3fps. And they don't mention 1/500 flash sync speed, so I'm assuming that it's 1/250 flash sync. They switched to SD when the norm for anything but a D50 is CF. And there still isn't mirror lock-up. But there are lots of stupid little creative tools.
Congratulations, Nikon mated with Casio...
Edited to add: maybe I'll switch over to Canon.

No mirror lockup..??? wow sorry thought that was a must have, what about sensor cleaning?
I guess with SD cards they expect the D50 -D80 upgrade path, and D70 to D200.

It probably has cleaning lock-up, like the D70. But I would have thought they would have mentioned in the article if it had full mirror lock-up.
It just seems like Nikon made this camera to look good on paper (ooo lots of megapixels! and SD! and in-camera editing!) and to the uneducated masses who want something better than their Kodak C300. I'll wait for reviews, though.
I just don't understand why Nikon would dilute the D200 rather than improve the D70.

Is that really an issue when a fast, multi-gigabyte SD card costs less than 5% of the body price? Flash memory prices have collapsed in the last 6 months or so, I really don't think anyone spending £800+ on a body will be that fussed. Anyone taking huge numbers of pics or using RAW seems to have one of those hard disk image storage things to dump them onto anyway.

Seems to have some pretty useful features too though. Like auto ISO with user adjustable maximum ISO and minimum shutter speed. Why doesn't Canon have this?
I'm not sure if Auto ISO is an useful feature.... Personally I'd like to be in total control of ISO rather than the camera deciding it. And you can pre-set maximum and minimum shutter speed and aperture with Canon 1 Series.

That's good, what with the 1 series and the D80 being pitched at exactly the same point in the market.
You can turn off Auto-ISO in any case (first thing I did on my D200)

There is actually. Not proper, but the D80 has what they call an exposure delay lock-up.
The mirror goes up , then 0.5 seconds later, the lens fires, thus doing away with the possibility of shutter induces camera shake. Thats perfect for what we need mirror lockup for. Isn't it?
Greg
I hope the D200 has this too as I may upgrade soon.
This is definatly just a new entry level cam or a step up from the D50.
Current D70 users would be silly to upgrade to the D80, better the D200.

To say I'm underwhelmed is an understatement.

D80 - Selectable minimum shutter speed in Auto ISO mode?
Canon 1 Series - selectable minimum & maximum shutter speeds & apertures in any mode.

I wish I hadn't read about the new D80 this morning. I have an almost uncontrollable urge to go out and buy a D200 now...
Do it, you wont regret it! I was unsure for a while after I got mine whether it was worth the extra over the D70, but having used it for a few months I find the features and build quality really are a big step up.
It's a fair bit bigger, but once you get used to that the handling is much better too - with several key controls located on the body instead of in the menus it's much more intuitive.
Dynamic range seems miles better, noise is noticably less evident (but still nowhere near canon), exposure is more reliable, colour rendition is more accurate, and it has much better weather sealing.
What it lacks is the "mode" dial on the top left of the D70 - so if you use portait/landscape/sports modes a lot, you'll miss them on the D200.
