Train Photos - Comments Please
Discussion
This year saw us celebrate my Dad's 50th Birthday. For a special gift, my sister and I bought him a driving experience driving a steam loco.
This sunday just gone, we went to the Great Central Railway in Loughborough so he could drive the train.
A great day was had by all, especially my Dad. I've posted some photo's below, please let me know your comments about the pics, and how they could be improved.
Some of the pics are untouched out of the camera, and others have been run through the one-stop photo fix in Paint Shop Pro 9...cheating I know, but i'm at work.
Many Thanks
Colin.

Thanks for the comments guys. I must say I'm quite proud of some of the pics I took at the weekend. I feel like i'm getting a better eye for a picture rather than just a snapshot. My Dad did comment on me taking pictures at weird angles, but i'm sure when he see's them he'll be impressed.
Cheers
Colin
Edited to add: Borders...I'm experimenting with them at the moment, i'm not really sure where to go with them.

Here are a few casual observations,
1. Not sure what relevance the lake to the railway has but it’s ok
2. Blurred track doesn’t do much for me…
3. Signal Box Levers – nice picture
4. Old sign ok but could do with something else like perhaps an old platform trolley or old luggage?
5. Steam engine and Diesel Multi ok but pity the dark green multi is in front of a dark green tree – could you have waited until the sun came out?
6. Brush Type 4 front end, not complete, as a detailed study of the engine I would like to see the top of the cab and the bottom of the bogie
7. Bell & Dials nice
8. Rusty boiler tubes – nice
9. Rusty bogie doesn’t do much for me
10. Type 4 builder’s plate and number ok…

I know nothing about taking pictures, I do know a bit about the subject though.
What you have to do, IMHO, is get pictures like this (which I hasten to add I did not take)....
Where the subject matter and composition are similar, but the actual photographs are as well executed as yours. There are loads of washed out, poorly focussed, poor resolution pictures of nice engines, where you get to see the whole thing. There are loads of really nice pictures, where half the engine can't be seen, it's a boring engine. It always seems that the two never come together.
Get the mix and you'll make a fortune selling them!

Maybe it's just me, but that looks overexposed... I ran into the same situation this past weekend when I tried shooting black cars and the photos all came out grossly overexposed.
I think you might have misunderstood. I was trying to separate the quality of the picture taking (the operation of the camera and such) from the content of the picture (what's in the picture, and where the camera is pointing).
I thought that the original posters pictures were really nice to look at (smooth and creamy but still sharp), it's just that they didn't contain anything interesting to me.
If the example I posted had been taken by the original poster, it would have been a superb picture. Also with the picture I posted the angle, IMHO, should have been slightly more to the side of the engine, rather than the front, and perhaps a bit further back.
Some of the best steam locomotive pictures can be had when the engine is "on shed", but also when it's over the pit, perhaps dropping the fire at dusk. Rainy thursday morning in march is a good one (atmospheric).
If you're feeling pretty brave, a really good one is on the main line, full chat (70-80 mph) at ground level from about 10 feet away. The trouble with that one though is that you need to take the best picture just at the point you're about to brick yourself!

Oops, I just gave that a second read. My mistake

you mean that black perimeter wasn't a camera defect?
