I wonder if anyone can clarify the legal position of this.
Girlfriend and myself went out the other night and parked near to a beautiful old Ferrari 275 GTB/4.
The car looked like it had just been restored and was just shouting "look at me".
I went back to my car and fetched my camera.
Whilst I was taking a few snaps of the car, a rather arrogant and gobby chap with a public school accent started shouting at me and saying, that I couldn't take pictures of his car.
I tried to reason with him, by saying that I would send him some prints, but he was having none of it. At one point, he even asked me to hand my camera over to him. Yeh, I am really going to do that!
Anyway, whilst I walked away, telling him that he was over reacting, I noticed that there was no tax disc on the windscreen. Could that be why he was being a total plank or was he just being up himself?

Maybe... Could also be that if you were to spread the photos around on the internet the car might be a target for thieves.

I dont believe there is any law preventing you from doing this.

Sounds like a bit of a knobhead, to be fair.

What he lacks in common sense, he obviously makes up for in car taste. I'd have gone home to fetch my camcorder to really wind him up.

May be he thought that for every picture you took of his car, a bit of it's soul would be lost

Perfectly legal to take photos of anything (or anyone) in a public space.

Meaning? Not all people who go to Public school are rude and ignorant.

Also I do have a degree of sympathy, the whole photographing other peoples cars thing is a bit excessive in this country, fair enough if you take your car to a show you expect it, but driving down motorways the number of van drivers who try to take pictures hanging out of the window, van wobbling wildly around the road, or the worst is the family of chavs who have to take pictures of the kids sat on or leaning on your car, makes the blood boil.

You'd hardly walk round someones house taking pictures of their possesions, so why is it seen as acceptable to take a pic of their cars?

But yes he did over react slightly.

As its an old car would it need a tax disc?,bloke sounds a right snob and deffinately not a true car enthusiast unless he had something to hide.

You still need a tax disc no matter how old it is, you just might not have to pay for it

Maybe he's watched "Gone in 60 Seconds" and thought his car might be one of the 50 chosen for deportation...

It's normally a courtesy to ask first if you can see the owner around, but I agree that if you have a car like that you're generally proud of it and people taking a photo of it is usually regarded as a compliment.

As for his accent, would it have bothered you sufficiently to comment if it had been - shall we say - working class?

I know a guy who owns a 275GTB/4 (amongst other nice cars) Seeing as they are rare as rocking horse doo, I asked him if he was involved. His reply.....

I think the tax disc angle is a red herring. The country is full of cameras and police road blocks to take care of stuff like that.
My view? (Post this on the site if you like, saying you spoke to another owner) If you drive these cars, expect to get photographed. I have lost count of the number of times I have been quite aggressively "circed" by kids on the motorway taking pictures of my car on their camera phone. Thing is, this bloke had probably had his picture taken a dozen times on the way to the pub without knowing it anyway.
The car does shout "look at me" because its one of the greatest Pininfarina designs, ever. I drive my car in the expectation that people will stop and chat and be interested. Its part of the thrill of ownership. Its not as quick as modern cars, but its appeal is in its looks. When I was a kid, I never thought I would own anything like it. So a big part of my pleasure now is giving as many people as possible access to photograph and see the car.
So on balance, he was just up himself.
Maybe this guy had just done the resto and shouldn't have been out in it :-)

Maybe the last line was the reason for your man's reluctance.
