I am a budding photographer and i am very keen to learn more. The internet is very useful for this sort of stuff but i cant seem to find sites that arent extremely detailed and difficult to understand. I want to know things such as how to understand F. and aperture and things like that without having technical jargon thrown at me left right and centre. I would be really grateful if anybody on here could help or link me to a good website.

Thanks

Personally speaking (and different people may have a different view), I'd first concentrate on what's in the view finder - stick the thing on "Auto" and suss out what makes a good picture.

Then play around with different settings to work out what does what. Assuming you have a digital camera, you can do this all day long and is really the best way to learn. You'll find that things then become instinctive.

Get out and shoot!

thanks for your comment, im on my second. Which is currently a kodak p880 - Slr type camera. And i originally had a kodak c340. I have PASM on my current camera and i am intrigued in how the manual works with things like F. for example and it really annoys me when i read about the camera and see something like - really fast F.!!2.4 up to 11.0! and im like What!?!? In other words i really want to push this camera to the limits but am unsure as of how to do it!

Just a quick reply.

P: Camera deals with shutter speed and aperture, but you can adjust things like white balance, iso etc.

A: Aperture priority; you can choose the aperture but the camera sets the shutter speed.

S: As 'A' but vice versa

M: You choose both aperture & shutterspeed, which enables you to vary the exposure.

That was how my minolta was set out anyway.

I've seen 'Photography made easy' type of magazines in a shop, so you could take a trip to WHSmith and have a browse around. You may also find some of the monthly photography magazines would be suitable for you too.

the bible is basic photography by m.j langford. every photographer i know has owned a copy at some point in their lives. stay away from the idiot books if your are keen on improving your photography skills as these tell you how to do things but not why to do them.

Actually, in Nikon and Canons (and I bet your Minolta), what you describe as 'P' is actually 'auto'. 'P' (for Program Mode) allows you to cycle through multiple combinations of aperture size and shutter speed whilst still maintaining the same exposure calculation.

Could be talking bollox, of course.
