Help!! Whats wrong with my camera!?
Discussion
I took a few general snaps on Wednesday night and noticed a slight banding on the images. Thursday I took a few more snap shots and the pics were fine. Today I went to take a few snaps and the pics were, well....have a look
Wednesday night

Today
These are just general snaps, so I know they are not great photos. Camera is a Nikon Coolpix5700 which is about 2 1/2 years old. Any help/advice will be greatly aprreciated. Thank you.
edit to add, banding doesn't look so bad now the images are smaller, it's quite bad on full size images.

The carmera sensor isn't being read out correctly.
Nikon's use 'CCD's that effectivly each sensor in a row is connected to the one next to it, and the image data is 'read' off from one side, with each pixel shifting to the left/right one pixel at a time.
What that last image looks like is that a whole 'row' clock has gone wrong, hence the whole missing lines. Due to the post processing that is being done that also explains the washed out look.
Get it to a repair shop.
(or throw it out and get a 350D - Canon's use CMOS arrays that can never suffer from this sort of issue)

Thanks guys
What puzzles me is the pics I took on Thursday were fine? I have recorded movies and they are fine too??
Joust, thanks for the reply! Somehow I just knew that this might cost me money
Movies only use a fraction of the total CCD lines (if you have a 2MP camera, a 320x240 movie will use 1/25th of the CCD), and hence as long as the missing rows aren't the one that it wants to use for the movie you'll be fine.

Thanks for the replies.
I checked the Nikon site for firmware updates and it seems my camera is allready running on the latest software.
I'm gonna take it to Jessops tomorrow to see what they say. I have a feeling it may be a very expensive trip tho

Could be a loose connection or a dodgy mode switch (might explain the intermittancy) but still not an easy fix. Probably cheaper to change especially as prices as as low as they have ever been at the moment it seems to me.
I believe in Japan they change cameras when the batteries go flat ....

Jessops had a D70s+18-70 lens for £599 that is about my budget, however I could stretch for the right camera/lens combo.
Whilst in Jessops today I had a play with both the D70s and 350d, I must admit I felt more comfortable with the D70s as it was bigger and seemed more robust. I'd prefer the D70s over the D50 as I have loasda CF cards. However I am rather wary of Nikon after the problems I have just experienced with my current camera.
It's a minefield out there lol!
