www.photocase.com/ is a brilliant online database for royalty-free pictures. I've used it to get large pictures for print illustrations. Everybody is free to contribute too.

Whilst we are on the subject www.sxc.hu is not bad as well.

However if you read the article it does list a company who used a "royalty free" image only to later get stung for royalties...
