I would like to do a pop art painting for my flat that looks something like the ones found here.
Does anyone know how I can take a picture and make it look like this as I don't think my artistic skills are upto doing it unaided?
I have GIMP and I have tried posterizing images but they don't look very good. I have also searched for tutorials but none show me how to do pictures like the ones in the link.

funnily enough Digital Photo magazine has an article (and video tutorial) on how to do this in this months edition.
I haven't followed it as I haven't got a round tuit so I will probably be able to help you in about 6 weeks, someone else with far more knowledge than me will probably be along a bit quicker, or take a wonder down to your local Smiths and browse. (I do like the video tutorials, I've learnt quiet a bit from them)
Cheers

Scanning it in Inkscape will give you that effect. Shift+Alt+B, scan in colour and have fun
Perfect, thankyou.
Just downloaded it and it works a treat just need to find the right pic now!
No worries. If you find how to colour areas as in "bucket fill" for other programmes please tell me as I have been looking for that option like mad!

For the Photoshop users (sorry, limited Gimp experience) here's how to get very close to the effect in the linked pic.
From this:
To this:
First remove colour:
Then use the level tool to give a high contrast picture:
Then the cutout filter. I used 3 levels (to match the linked image), edge simplicity 4, edge fidelity 1:
The final step is to make a new overlay layer, then fill it with the colour of your choice:
Before flattening the image you can play with the colour and the opacity of the overlay layer. After use the levels tool to adjust the image.

Ive just done something similar in photoshop using the pen tool. Here are the steps that I used:

using an automated approach like photoshop filters doesnt really give a good result IMO.
