The new one:

Despite pouring 100mm of oil over todays burger, I still didnt get the wet look I was after. Which looks best?

Could you coat it with tracle for a glossy look?

did you put oil on just after cooking?
if you leave it a while to settle then oil may stay on outside

but then you need the cheese to melt.... scratchchin

Why not cook the burger well in advance then simply varnish it. It will be nice and shiny, then. I suppose melting the cheese may then be a problem but it can probably be overcome by melting it with a blowtorch from above prior to the application of the salad.

Also, in case you didn't know... take a drag of a fag and blow smoke through a straw into burger just prior to shot... that's how I've seen TV ads get food to steam. Probably a good idea not to eat it after mind. vomit

I'd rather eat the first one and I think if people are looking to buy a burger photo they will choose the one they'd most like to eat.

1. Its a cheap looking bun that should really be toasted. It looks pale
2. Lettuce is too pale. Tomatoes look pale too.
3. looks like it has go cold, oil won't fix that IMHO. Set up the camera first, then cook and assemble the burger, maybe use a different cheese that melts on its own.
4. That commen on flat does make me think. Focus on the edge closest, and slight out of focus on the sides would look great.

Tops and tails, the right way up. Ive adjusted the levels a little, any better in your opinion?

scratchchin I'll have to try coating it with something other than oil, oil just doesnt seem to stick. I melted the cheese by putting it directly on the burger whilst still in the pan, after flipping it having d decided which way up and which way round the patty was going to go, then afterwards gave it the oil treatment twice before putting it in the bun, liberally pouring it out of the bottle over the entire burger. Then dabbed it with even more oil after it seemed to dry up.... Don's varnish plan might work, great idea! Might try treacle first though, so I can eat it afterwards.

Oi!

I have not moved onto such things as burgers. I am still trying to get the hang of single bits of fruit & veg ( as can be seen by my wonderful shallots. )

Agreed - glycerine will make it look shiny. That's what they use on cookbook shoots I believe.

Actually, I've seen an article on photography for cookbooks somewhere recently. If I'm not back shortly, send someone in to Google to find me will you...

Edited to say here you go. It's not the one I meant, but it's quite interesting.

Can I challenge you to an appetising bowl of cereal then Bob?

Maybe I've a weird imagination but the new one looks like a red eyed face puking. Hence strangely unappetising

Ive heard of nitro glycerine, but household glycerine... isnt it a type of sugar (or made up liquid sugar)?

Thats a great little article, thanks for googling it. Did the before and after pics work for you? I tried firefox as well as internet explorer, but only the before pics appeared.

Ive just had a look at the burger king website. Have a look at the burger on the main page eek Both my burgers pale in comparison!! cry Praps thats why I dont create food photos for a living hehe Im going to try making a few more this year, but finding a flawless bun will be nigh on impossible. I thought the one I used yesterday was good, for supermarket standards. My photoshopping skills are so poor, I dont know if I could ever achieve that result. I will try again though

Of course Im up for a serial shoot [sic] yes How about you platinum? ears
