Should santa bring me a D200?
Discussion
I've had a D70 for 2 years now and whilst it has served my needs pretty well (which are not that demanding really), I have often been disappointed with image quality. When I bought the D70 I had a good look at the D100, but decided that I didn't need the robustness of the metal casing etc, so opted for the more user-friendly D70. Whilst I still don't (need the robustness) Mrs Claus has offered to buy me a D200 for Christmas.
Should I go for it?
Also, for the more technical minded, I presume the D200 still uses a CCD sensor. Is that so?
Thanks,
Gixxer

I just made this switch myself last month. And I'd say - get yourself down the shop now, don't stop running until you get there!
You won't regret it. The larger LCD display is great, and the D200 doesn't have the same issues with underexposure. The extra few megapixels come in handy, too.
Colour reproduction is quite a lot better, and the extra buttons are useful. I like the fact that you can zoom in on your shots in the camera with the D200 - no more of those "damn, it's not quite in focus!" moments when you upload the images to your computer.
I read somewhere that the D70(s) is a good camera if you're not afraid to use Photoshop (or whatever) to bring your shots up to scratch. The D200 doesn't necessarily need that editing stage. Personally, I do a lot less editing now than I ever did with shots out of my D70s.
I suppose the acid test is - would I make the switch again? God, yes. Definitely. Go for it. You'll love it.

I have both a D70 and a D200. The D70 has done nothing but gather dust since the D200 arrived - it's a far, far superior camera in every way and as mentioned, the zoomable LCD screen is fantastic. The D200 really is a joy to use - the D70 is decidedly amateur by comparison.
In short, do it. Now.

How do you mean zoomable?
I can press one button on my D70 and it zooms into 100% then I can hold the Q icon and twiddle the wheel to go in to 200%. What does the D200 do differently?
Also, can someone clarify if there is a mirror lock-up mode for long exposures please?
I held one the other day and took some comparison shots when me and my local Nikon dealer were testing the refurbed 70-200VR lens I got fixed.
I almost got my wallet out then and there but managed to hold back. I'm waiting for this months pay packet and if its good, I'm joinign you lot on Nikon

I think you should.
It's a great camera for the money!
I have been toying with the idea of a DSLR for a while now. I looked at and played with the D80 and D200 both. Needless to say I walked out of there with a D200 and 18-200 VR lense. Good solid piece of kit compared with a plasticy feeling d80.
Damn thing is smarter than me though and I have much to learn.

Just opened this months pay cheque................................
............................now where should I go to buy a D200
I may not yet be any good at photography, but as we all know, its not the skill of the user but the quality of the equipment!
I'm coming aboard the 200 clud!!
Greg
(ps. Anyone after a very well looked after D70?)

Warehouse Express are very good. Order by 2 pm and they'll have it to you next day, if they've got them in stock.
Get a spare battery at the same time.
Seriously! Battery life isn't as good as on the D70. There appear to be stock problems with the Nikon batteries, but I bought Hähnels and they're fine. I think I paid about £36 each for them.
