This is probably a fairly regular post for this forum, please be kind.

I did a little photography as a teenager with my dad's SLRs, then had a very early digital camera about 7 years ago (2meg and pretty basic). I've just been using a simple compact since then (time, family and money limiting, no surprises there).

For this Christmas my family are buying me a new camera. Ok, I've already been out and bought it, but they're giving me the money !
It's a Canon A710 IS, so I'm hoping this is a reasonable entry-level to intermediate camera. Opinions? Reviews and general feedback seem to have been positive.

Question - other than essential stuff (batteries, memory card, case etc) are there any other accessories that are worth having?

Question - can you recommend any textbook or on-line resources for beginners?

Question - I have a fairly basic printer (HP 970Cxi) - it will print photo quality OK. If I want something printed at very high quality I'll pass it on to my dad, who has an A3 quality printer. In the short term, for general prints, is it worth using the high street type printing systems?

Thanks for any advice.

So long as your new camera gives you manual control (or aperture/shutte priority) is about all you realy need to get going.

A good book is this one.

Don't know the camera but from specs and reviews it sounds super (especially 6x optical zoom and IS).

Regarding the accessories question, what sort of photography most interests you?

May be worth thinking about a tripod if you want to get creative in lower light and or say do close-ups.

Perhaps some software? e.g. Photoshop Elements.

Have fun!
