bath lights festival, plus how far should i photoshop this?
Discussion
hey,
bit bored today as i went in to uni only to find out that i have done everything i need to do for the morning so am not needed. i have spent a fair while trying to photoshop some pictures more extensively than normal and would appreciate some opinions on whether they work and if there is anything else i should try and do.
this is one that i have posted before but i have changed it, mainly because a thread in P+P made me try and make it into a background. i have extended the gravel and increased the sky height to get the aspect ration to work. but the black looked too empty so i put a moon in there. does it work? (sorry it is large, but it doesnt really work at 750)
this is from the bath lights turning on evening (as are all of the following). i have spent quite a while photoshopping out the barrier infront of hte ride, and removing a big bag from the bottom centre. i have also altered the brightness of some of the background highlights to keep the focus on the ride itself. does it work?
(replaced after new crop)
bath lights 1
bath lights 2
bath lights 3
any thoughts on any of them?
cheers

Nice photos!
On number 2, something which bugs me when I look at the photograph (which I really like, by the way) is that the carouselle is not central. Do you see what I mean? It makes me look at it slightly slanted

good point. i have been looking at that for hours but still managed to miss that!

I really like the shot actually

cheers. when i came around the corner and saw a merry-go-round i knew that i had to take a picture of it. the barriers were very annoying though and took quite a bit of work to get rid of them. it still wouldnt be good enough to print but i do quite like it too.
1. is an interesting image. I can't work out whether the moon works or not, its rather flat compared to the fisheyed building.
2. Nice shot. It was worth taking out the barrier. What did the original (colour) version look like?
3. I think this is my favourite. I like the way that the subdued magnificent cathedral rises out from the colourful throng of the busy crowd.
Did you remove the colour version of 4. I thought I'd seen it there earlier?

this is how the merry-go-round pic came out of the camera (just resized and reduced to 150kb):
i havent posted a colour version of 4 (unless i have been sleep posting). it is possible that you have seen a similar picture by a different photographer. the moment i packed up my camera and stepped off the step someone else moved in to take the spot!
My personal taste would be that with the possible exception of the first one, that they work better in colour. You've got some interesting colour in the various lighting in most of them so it seems a shame to lose it. Difficult to capture this range of lighting too. I like the composition of no. 3.
I hope you don't mind, butI had a go at the carousel one as on my screen it looked a bit muddy and dark (I have a feeling my monitor is a bit dark though so forgive me). I just brightened it up so the crowd is a touch more visible and tried to increase the contrast a little with Curves to give the lighting punch. It may be OTT/unnatural (some detail in the lighting has gone). I've darkened the other lights in the scene as you did but only extremely crudely to give an idea.
How have you done the black and white conversions by the way?

i appreciate what you say about the colour vs b&w choice. i should have worked at playing with the colours more in photoshop, but i havent got very good at this yet, so b&w seemed to work better.
i do like your version of the carosel in colour.
to convert to b&w i use photoshop to desaturate and then play with brightness and contrast to get a result i like. if i can really be bothered i do sometimes use rawshooter essentials to desaturate and then play with the shadow and brightness contrast seperately as this can seem to give good results more easily.
For B&W have a go at using Channel Mixer in Photoshop. You might like it.
There are some tutorials about the Net, but essentially you choose Image>Adjustments>Channel Mixer and then click the monochrome box. Then play with the Red, Green, Blue sliders to your heart's content. Results are often best if the 3 values total about 100. You can fiddle with the overall slider at the bottom if needed too.
I haven't used it much, but much prefer the results I get compared to when I used to desaturate. For me it's still mainly trial and error, but I believe with more practice, it's possible to understand what is likely to look best based on the predominant colours of the original colour image.
