I'm just trying to create a small watermark in PS to apply to images outside of the PS environment. I've created a transparent image then added my text to it. The text is white, the background is transparent. Right? Sounds straightforward enough. And I'm sure it used to work in my old version of PS.

But then I have to save it. On saving the background is turning to white. Does anyone have any ideas why? I can't see any obvious reason as to why this would happen. I've tried saving in JPG, TIF and BMP format, and I have the same problem every time.

I must be missing a setting somewhere. Any ideas where?

The only format that supports transparency is GIF - choose the "Save for Web" option in PS. You can then pick the colour that should be transparent (i.e. the background colour in this case). If the background is already set to transparent, PS should pick this up automatically.

If you have the mask applied to the layer in PS (so background is checker pattern), then save for web and then PNG 24 with transparrency also works... and is generally a nicer format the old (lisenced but who cares?) single axis compressed gifs.

For some reason the later versions of PS ignore alpha channels even in TGA's with 32 bit... the overall effect of the transparrency is essentially condensed to RGB and the alpha dumped never to be seen again... I still use 6 for my transparrency heavy work (ie, game textures and such)
