Another which DSLR thread
Discussion
Hi, sorry for this... I know there has been a few threads lately but I'm getting quite confused with choices now.
Im probably looking to buy a new camera after New Year. As a bit of background Im fairly new but do understand iso, exposure etc. Have found over the last year I have been mostly doing pictures of cars. Would definately like to do more motorsport, however am finding the camera I use just now a bit slow to do everything (plus its Dad's and I fancy my own). Obviously as I learn more, the chances of me experimenting with different types of photography is much greater aswell.
I have I guess a budget of say £600.
If this could include 2 lenses or whatever then great (as often I cant get terribly close to the subject and would like one with a reasonable zoom). If it includes the body and kit lens but I get a substantially better camera in the process then I can live with that, and buy another lens (or whatever) as I learn and progress.
I was thinking either a D50 or 400D.
D40 seemed pointless, D70 is too expensive still.
But really, don't know enough to pick. The Canon seems will cost me more, but is it worth the extra ? I have read reviews, but wanted to ask some people who might be able to weigh things up better than I can in my head.
Or any other advice?
Im going to try and pop into a shop on Tuesday to have a look at some different models. I have quite small hands, so get the feeling that the small size of some models might be a bonus for me, where it seems others dont like it.
Thank you
Alan.

IMO the 400d is a fair step up from the D50.
Whichever finding a right lens for motorsport wont be easy, it needs reach and speed, together thats expensive, switchable(multi mode) IS is often a good idea too.
400D kit with 17-55 cheapo is 375 (digitalrev) leaving 225 for a zoom..
D50 is 325 for same.
That doesnt leave that much for a fast good telephoto, a second hand sigma 70-200 f2.8 or cheapo 70-300 f5.6 new mebe, 100more gets you thr 70-300f4-5.6 IS canon, sigma 70-200f2.8 is 450, canons excelent 70-200f4L is 330 or so.

Thanks a lot for the reply, gives me something to look into.
Ive re-read some of the stuff on the net I already had tonight and I see what you mean about how the Canon is a step up, it seems to be compared with the D80.
I didn't realised they could be bought as cheaply though, so definately recon that will be the choice. I was put off by the fact I thought it was going to be quite a bit more expensive than the D50.
In terms of lenses, I don't think I need go overboard.. something thats just capable of a decent shot. I won't be trying to photograph F1 cars or anything doing 100+ past me. Although spending a few 100 for something semi decent is fine
Just may be an idea if I first buythe camera and then figure out what my requirements are, once I understand how it all fits together a bit more.

The upgrades to the 400 are not a quantum leap in reality so you would save £££ and not really miss out on much
