I've just had a guy from America who wants to use some of my photos for his website and possibly in print as well. He is the US dealer for Westfield. I've never had a request like this before, and haven't a clue what to charge, bearing in mind my photography is just a hobby. Just after some advice on how to proceed!

Hi, I was browsing through your Megahoon 2006 photos and really liked some of your shots of your Westie! I am the U.S. dealer for Westfield and am always looking for some good photos of the cars and was wondering if we might talk about using one or two of your photos for some website or print ads over here?

His website is here. Looks like he wants to use them for ads.

I find myself in this situation quite often. My usual getout is to ask the prospective to make a 'sensible' offer for the use, including details of where, and on what medium they will be using your work, then you'll have a rough idea what ball park you are in, and you can up it as you see fit. (If you steam in with silly money, they'll go elsewhere - honest).

I sold a couple of close up shots of bees on sunflowers a couple of years ago for £100 - £150 each I think. Wasn't planning to sell them and didn't get bogged down in discussing usage, it was sort of a friend, so just agreed a little cash sum. TBH I was so flattered at the time I'd have given them away!

If you go into www.alamy.com they have a matrix allowing various criteria to be input to calculate the price you could be selling.
At least it will give you a guide
If it is any help I charge about £100 for one image to be used on a website for 1 year

If you think the photo is good enough that you could sell it again, only sell the 'reproduction rights'. If you sell the full copyrite, its his and he can sell it on and make money, which you'll never see...
