I have done an Educational slide show and I want to use Bonnie Tyler's 'I need a Hero'music as backing. CAN I FIND WHERE TO GET COPYRIGHT PERMISSION???? NOT A CHANCE!!
It is no wonder people breach this copyright as it is virtually impossible to find out who where or how you get this permission. I have spent ages reading endless pages on MPA site (and others) ploughing my way through tons of incomprehensible information but no way can I find this track and how to get a licence for it. I believe it is a 'mechanical licence' I want so maybe I need a *** garage....I hope there is someone out there who can help me as I am getting to the stage where two years in prison seems the easier option........ (just joking)but I am furious

Ahhhhhhh sounds like you know what you are talking about. Thanks for this I will ring tomorrow. I hope the price is right eek I am willing to pay a reasonable price as I have spent a lot of time making this WMV work. Do you have any idea of costs for extracts of music £100s more or less?? They don't have a smiley that is fainting....

It all depends on usage... if it's to 6 women and a dog at a WI jam tart party, it's piss cheap. If it's for the new Pepsi ad, we are talking proper cash.

I see thanks. Looking at that link, I have actually been to that site today and think that the best thing would be to ring as you have suggested.

Unfortunately the policy at MCPS is sometimes "stick a finger in the air, and see which way the wind is blowing, then think of a number, and multiply it by 57.834"

Some music is actually almost impossible to licence, as the artists (or artists estate) can actually have a say as to whether a track is used for a specific video.

Unlikely, and rare, but it does happen.

Now I've filled your night with doom and gloom, it's not all bad..... We licenced Fatboy Slim's "Right Here, Right Now" for use on a film that was shown at a roadshow of conferences around the UK earlier this year... total combined audience was in excess of 4000 people, and also to release the film on DVD to delegates who missed the live events.... and it literally only cost us a couple of hundred quid. I was expecting a much higher bill when the track was first decided on.

If you are doing this educational slideshow in a place of education it should come under 'fair use'.
If you are doing the it in a licensed venue they will already have a PRS, MCPS and PPL license (I'd hope). That will cover you.
The only issue will be if the slideshow depicts an image that could go againts the principles of Bonnie Tyler.

Well finding that out my be hard. It is a science based video but does have a mild political message - it is also in support of a well known scientist who has been somewhat maligned over recent years for standing up for what he believes in. Hence the Hero bit.

Good point about Bonnie Tyler. Wonder how we can reach her. Her website appears to only offer contact for bookings.

She hasn't done a bit for a while, it may be cheaper to get her to come and sing it whilst you do the presentation. hehe

When it comes to finding out if a use of song to picture sync would cause offence to the artist it isprobably ok just to do a bit of research on the artist in quetion.
Unlike the tory party who used a Massive Attack song for a party conference. The fact that that the Massive Attack members had strong socialist views meant it didn't go down to well.

When dealing with use of recorded material one thing to remember is that it is in the interests of the copyright owner to have the material in use.

In case anyone is still following this thread I thought I would update you on my attempts to get a licence. I finally got a form for a licence for a NON BROADCAST AUDIO/VISUAL PRODUCTION and filled it in for the Hero presentation. I am hoping that it is that simple ( haha). No chance! I have also done a second one with Eve of the War (War of the worlds) as the backing - Yes I know another nightmare.... I have even joined the War of the Worlds forum to try and get a contact and am communicating with someone called Evil Nerd who is the forum administrator and says he has contacts with the JWM. So far no luck......the response is to be turned down flat by the looks of it. Mainly cos I am thinking of putting it on a web page. I promise if it ever gets a licence -you people will be the first to get the link for your help. I believe I may have to get other permissions like from the sound recorder and the the person who brought the coffees etc NO WONDER PEOPLE TAKE THE CHANCE OF GETTING A JAIL SENTENCE OVER THIS...IT IS A SHAMBLES........from start.. no doubt to finish.
Next time I do one of these I think I will just play the recorder in the background.......hmmmmmmmmmm. rolleyes
