I may have the opportunity to acquire (legally) a Nikon D1x body in the next couple of months.
Any comments on the camera? I'll be paying trade in value for it - is it worth the outlay?
I suppose it all depnds on what I can get it for...

I would have said not.
Technologically it is somewhat outdated now. You would be better off spending the same on a more downmarket modern camera IMO.

agreed. I used a D1x for a couple of years - it was the camera that got me into my job, and at the time it was good. Now it is outclassed by the cheapest of cheap dslrs.
For £100 I'd take it no question, but for image quality I'd rather put and extra £400 in and spend £500 on the D80. I'm much impressed by Mrs CVP's one it does a lot for the cash.
The build quality on the old D1 is superb though compared to the more "disposable" feel of the D80

It'll make a good ash try a D1X is so out dated now they are not worth trading. You'll be able to pick upa D2H for next to nothing soon.... The technoligy is moving on so fast now. Keep an eye on Ebay.....

What if it was available for £100...?
I don't know what price it will be, but would would the "cutoff" price be where it would be better to go for something else?
And how long is a piece of string?

Cutoff... difficult (as it'll probably go wrong and they won't fix it for you), so I'd say £300 tops. £400 if you get 12 months warranty (IMHO)
It's still miles better than a D50... most of these taken with the D1x www.stevecarter.com/wild/wild.htm

It's easy to forget that this was a top of the range pro slr, not a bottom of the range 6mp consumer slr . . . it's not going to win the megpixels wars now but if what you want it a solid chunk of slr that 'should' be very robust then a good price on a D1x is, as Steve suggests, a deal worth having . . .
It's like comparing a new fiesta to a 10 year old 5 series . . . no comparison really . . .

It's an interesting topic of discussion, what is it that outdates a camera do you think? Just number of Megapixels or other factors also?
I bought a D2h last year and was tossing up between that and D1x (Mr Get's one in fact
). I agree the D2h will probably be worthless soon if not already (based on it's by current standards palty 4.2MP) but for me I rarely print stuff anyway, and if I do it is unlikely to be larger than A4 (which I am happy with the results of). However it will rattle through a fairly obscene amount of pics in quick succesion on continuous shooting (9 frames a second, plays about 3fps for a D80 for instance) and buffer upto 40pics before loading them to card swiftly. The build quality is superb (as was the original D1 I had before so assume the same for the D1x) and the handling just feels right; the cheaper newer stuff I have held neither fits right in my hands, nor gives me the same confidence that I can manhandle and abuse the same way as these. The trade off, yes I can't rescue a pic by cropping in that much like a higher res camera, but equally I am possibly more likely to get a shot I need thanks to the fast shooting rate which I might not get with a lower ranking but newer model - it's a trade off but for me and how I use my images it works, I will probably always prefer one of yesterday's pro spec cameras to today's consumer stuff.
Now how are the prices of used D2x's coming along as that is next on the list
