Actually we turned up on Christmas morning with some Champers but no wine. Realising that most of the wine in the house cost about £3.50 and the nice stuff pre-ordered hadn't arrived (despite being ordered a week earlier rolleyes ), we hopped in the car to find ANYWHERE that sold wine (they live in the middle of nowhere, nearly as rural as you Steve ). Found a pub/restaurant place with a reasonable selection.

Enjoyed a bottle of Cloudy Bay with Christmas lunch myself. The Chardonnay, though, not their famous Sauvignon Blanc.

I get over the "getting any" problem by buying direct from New Zealand once a year.

These people will ships a mixed case of Cloudy Bay wines. It works out costing the same as sourcing locally except - you can actually get it.

I like Oyster Bay - but it isn't comparable with Cloudy Bay other than having "Bay" in the name. An alternative would be Montana's Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc. In any event - sounds like it was good fortune that the local pub could help out!

Edited to say - fun pictures!

Ah, Nice. But, you see; If they send me a case of Cloudy Bay... I'll have drunk the lot within a week (possibly two). lick No self control I'm afraid. Cloudy Bay sitting in a cupboard is like empty track time at Donington, free studio time at Abbey, courtesy DBS, Winter sunshine in the Hebrides : Just gotta' be used whilst it's there.

I'm not one for deferred gratification I'm afraid.
