I bought a dslr a month back now,a nd while messing about and learning a lot over the past while, I haven't really taken anything worthwhile... so decided to have a bit of a play about tonight.

Made up a small lightbox out and old shoe box, some cardboard and a4 paper as an experiment, using 2 bedside lamps for illumination and also the built in flash.

These were taken with a 400D and Sigma 70-300 APO DG lens.. any input would be good, and yes I know they should have all been taken using a tripod but I think those without turned out ok

So for a first go, ok ?

Don't wanna psot 12 pics up here so they are here > www.ajl959.com/lightbox/

Here is an example

Oh and an extra one I done yesterday with just the flash.

You've got nice natural colours, but i think the depth of field is too shallow in some of the shots. I see you've shot almost all of them at 300mm - this combined with handheld might account for the slight lack of sharpness. I'd try getting closer in to use the lens at 70-150mm with a smaller aperture and see how that comes out to compare.
A great collection though, the 3rd one stands out for me.

ps. i didn't like the pencil shot as the focus is just too soft. imho macro shots have to be pin sharp.

Cheers.

Yeah to be honest I thought the same with DOF once I seen them on the computer but didn't want to go back and try and re-do the shots.

Problem with getting in closer is that the lens has a min distance for something like 0.75m that it can focus at, so being as far away was the reason for them all being at 300.

I will give it a try though at a shorter focal length and with a smaller aperture tonight and see how they turn out.

Ahh of course. Why not use the 18-55mm lens then?
