Ignoring todays cameras its fine, but including the 350d, 400d & nikon stuff you have to look very closely at the price & what else is bundled with it.

I'd have one if it was cheap enough & I couldnt stump up for a 350d, but remember (unless you hack it) its artificialy restriced in a number of ways (no AI servo AF unless in sports mode etc, many of these types of silly restrictions are in).

Its also slow compared to todays cameras. Takes an age to switch on, slower shooting etc.

The pictures it can take are most excelent though, eevry bit as good as my 350d. BUT if you can afford it go for the newer model.

It was what I used till I brought my 400D late last year. I still have it as a back up. If your Budget can't stretch to a new 400D its a good camera.

For examples of the sort of results you can get you can have a look at my photos from last year;

Everything up to and including the Silverstone BTCC round. these were mostly taken with a 75-300 lens and the 18-55 kit lens for the off track shots.

That looks like a good buy if your budget is peanuts. If he is telling the truth about only 1000 shots it'll still be quite like new. Mine is a bit more worn than that with well over 15,000!

I was going to get a 300D instead of my 350D but the prices of the 300 are so stupid I managed to get the 350 for around the same as the 300 except the 350 was a lot newer. So make sure you look at the prices carefully. A brand new 400D + 18-55 can be had for around £499 and seeing as the 350D is getting on a bit now, I am sure you can find some good deals.

I still have mine. The quality of the pictures it takes are not limited by the camera in any way!

I've got a 300D as a second camera.

The only drawbacks I found were a slowish start up time and continous burst was limited.

The pictures it takes are very good though.

Replaced it with a 30D but keep it as a backup.

Had one and got rid of it as it died at 9000 shots. Bare in mind when buying that the shutters are only rated at 10000, you may get more but don't count on it. Mine was pretty much spot on! That said I do a lot of astro work involving low temps and 8minute exposures. This may have not helped. 350d is also rated the same. New shutter effectively makes the camera a write off. That's why I went Nikon -even the cheap D50 was rated at 50000, the D80 75000.

That said the 300D is a great first dslr, very easy to use and I prefer the size to the smaller (and cheaper feeling?) 350/400D. Burst is very poor and is slow to start and write to the card. You have to ask if your photography skill is actually going to be the limiting factor or camera...

Canon dont publish the durabuility for the low end dSLR's , its more like 25k for the 300d, 50k for the 350d and 100k for the 400d.

Canons burst shooting is and has always been faster than Nikons equivelant models.

They reckon 100k for the 30D aswell.

My 300D must have done around 10k.

I still use my 300d exclusively and I've shot over 30K photos with it.

The only problem I have mostly doing sport is the slow write speed and the small buffer. Other than that it's been great.

I've just saving up waiting for the 40D
