I'm looking to upgrade from my D50 to a D200.

The prices from Digitalrev look hard to ignore.

Anyone bought from them, and what are the disadvantages, if any? scratchchin

buying from hongkond, its an import, you'll pay vat and import when its delivered are the savings you make worth it.

from camerapricebuster.co.uk D200 is £818 for a UK camera
from Digital rev £699 + 65 postage and probably around £40 TAXs

for me I'd spend the extra and get a UK camera

I've bought a lense from them but not a camera. I tend to stick to UK shops for the camera. But they are very reputable seller. And they guarantee VAT free for some items (clearly shown on the ads).

I bought a couple of lenses a couple of years ago - one came through with no tax being charged (shipped from within the UK), and the other was stopped by customs, but DR put a low figure on the invoice, so I was only charged a fraction of what I should have been.

I'm not sure how they get away with it to be honest!!

Same happened to me... got charged £2 as VAT on a £900 lens

If the margins are low, I'd still shop UK mind.

FWIW.

Nikon warranties work like this.

Lenses = Worldwide warranty.

Cameras and other hardware = Continent specific warranty.

So if your lovely new D200 that you bought in HK or Aisa goes Kaplunk, you'll need to take it back to the retailer over there to get it repaired! yikes

Buy a UK camera.

Buying from DigitalRev etc..

Make sure it's a "No VAT & Duty" offer. If you get hit for charges on delivery, all you need to do is scan the receipt and e-mail it to them. They will refund in a few days.

Warranties. They back all their kit with a warranty and have a UK office to deal with problems.

I got my 20D from them almost 2 years ago. I got hit for £60 by UPS and got the refund in less than a week. The camera was a UK model and has been flawless.

The choice is yours...

Unless things have changed in the last year I don't think that's true . . .

I bought my 10.5 fisheye from a camera shop in colorado and the warantee clearly states that it's US only . . . not something that bothered me given the savings . . . and I agreed with the camera shop I bought it from that I could return to him should I need to . . .

Worth the risk with a few hundred quid lens, not worth the risk with a multi K body . . . I bought my D2x from Grays, reputation was one consideration, UK based another, but their prices were actually quite reasonable too . . .

Onestop digital (think that's what they are called-can find a link if needed) are a HK reseller that do VAT free on everything. Good prices too, though I've never used them.

Site seems similar to the microglobe one. Don't konw if they are linked as I've heard rumors of MG's stuff being grey import.

On a D2Xs no-VAT guaranteed (i.e. refund scheme in place) you will pay around £2K from DigitalRev in HK with the P&P. Warranty is HK warranty and you will need to send it back there should a problem occur. They have a UK agent to make this easier.

Whilst if there is a problem there is no doubt that dealing with a HK supplier will be more inconvenient show me where you can get a D2Xs, no shutter actuations, brand new in its box for £2K. Cheapest prices I've seen are closer to £3K - which is the UK retail price.

So - a £1K saving vs the possibility of some crap.

It's a choice. And I understand its not a no-brainer, especially if you are reliant on the camera body for your income. But for an enthusiast it could be, given the HK supplier is reputable, a way to obtain an expensive camera body at a very healthy discount.

As you can guess - I've been thinking about it...

Contact Ian @ kerso1123@msn.com

He sometimes exports from the US, is well trusted (by quite a few on here too), and will give you a good price if he's got stock of Nikon bodies

If not, keep him in mind for lenses.

. . . when I bought my D2x (over a year ago now I think) the price saving buying from HK was nothing like 1K, more like 200-300 quid max depending on the seller . . .

So a £200 saving vs the likelyhood of some crap . . . I value my time and stress levels more than that . . .

The price gulf has clearly widened in the last couple of years . . .

I brought the Canon 100mm Macro from them. Got hit with some silly import costs when the delivery bloke knocked on my door.

Had to get the credit card out as didn't have £50/ £60 in cash, or something stupidly high. Still made a saving but not by as much as I'd first thought I would have.
