Folks,

I've got a 200Mb .avi file that was shot onboard the dragster that I'm trying to edit, but it appears to be corrupt.. Windows Movie maker allows me to cut it into clips, but when that's done all I get is the audio and no picture, I've tried just plonking the whole thing in and letting movie maker convert it into a .wmv but that does almost the same thing, just gives me a static image (the first frame) and the audio and nothing else..

I've thrown the original at premiere pro, but that moans about unsupported compression..

Does anyone have any idea what I can do with it?? It's really beginning to annoy me and I want to do something with this file!

Cheers in advance,

slinky

a slight hope

If your computer is having stress coping with a large file, it may often do such a thing. I have 1 gig ram here and if I try and process an avi of that size Movie Maker often complains (quite often by crashing).

suggestions

break the avi down into smaller bits and try then.

make sure you are on the latest movi maker (bugs a plenty in early ones)

buy a Mac.

Good call!!

Unfortunately the pockets are empty, and splitting the file down from its original size destroys it

Go into MovieMaker.

Select TOOLS and OPTIONS

Click on the compatibility tab

Clear them all.

Close moviemaker and then reopen.

Try editing now. Sometimes, if you have other codecs/video filters installed, it will cause moviemaker to crash.

Other than that, Premier Elements or (borrow a mate's) Premier Pro is your friend.

I was really hoping that you had the answer there Ernest! but unfortunately, still the same problem..

I've already thrown it at Premiere, and that really doesn't like it either

Bugger.. I want to put this video online!

if you still have the video on tape, could you not just delete it and re-upload it? its just possible that might work.

Recorded direct onto SD card by camera, card now formatted (recording was done 6-8 months ago)

This probably sounds nuts, but change the .avi file extension to .mpg and try importing it into Premier.

Works for .avi files from my Canon Ixus.

Not quite the most impressive work ever, but it gets the point across!
