I'm sorry to start a thread like this, i am aware its a common topic and haven't been here long.

I currently have a kodak z740 and its ok but there are alot of things I don't like about it.. the AF is hard to control and doesnt have many zone options so getting focus on what you want can be tricky. The buffer time from a burst shot is far too long and the burst is too slow. Another thing i dont like is the lack of image stabilizing. A mate in the pub has a Canon ixus 850 and has demonstrated shots with 1/10 shutter speeds and no blur. I cannot hold a camera still enough to do that. Especially if its any zoom length, so really liked that feature on his.
I would like to solve those issues with a new camera but have been looking at my options.. I really like the look of either the canon Powershot S3 IS, Fuji FinePix S9600 or a 3rd option is a DSLR.
I am not sure if a DSLR is for me though. The cost seems pretty high to me but if it can help me get better i would concider it. My main issue is the lens options, my kodak is 38-380mm but i wouldnt mind having it a bit wider angle so i like the big zoom compacts for the range. The dslr's dont seem to have a lens that does that range in one... it seems either a 20-55 or 80-300 any larger and they look like telescopes and i dont fancy carrying that much. The issue is that i dont like the idea of lens swapping all the time after hearing dust on the CDD is a big deal.
I would like to get better at taking photo's so would like a step up and tend to use the zoom so i think i fall into a odd demographic right now. I would like to spend as little as possible but have some room to progress. Any ideas or recomendations?

The only way is up I'm afraid. If you want decent photos, you need a decent camera. SLR's open up a whole world of options, and DSLR's are now on E bay at silly money.

This at under £250 just found after a 2 second search: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Nikon-D50-Digit
