I'm about to join the world of the digital SLR, and I think I will go with the Canon 400D. I have read a few reviews and the main negative comments to come out of it are the that lens is not that great, but I'm told thats true of most kit len's.
I only have £500 to spend and obviosuly I can upgrade the lens at a later date.

So does anyone have this camera and is it right for a begginer like me, I would appreciate any comments.

Cheers

I think it should be a perfect starter for you. But stop saying 'the lens isn't that great'! (I know you were just quoting but you know what I mean. ) You shouldn't start with a negative feeling towards your gear. Believe me it does the job fine. If you believe it's bad, all the images you take will seem bad to you.

Yup i have one of these and its great as a camera for a beginner, or even someone who already has some experience. There are so many options you can play to your hearts content. You can start off in Programme Mode and use as a point and shoot, then when you have some experience and you want to take more control you have a full range of manual modes. I permanently shoot in Aperture Priority mode for example.

Mine is backup for a 1D but there are times when i want to carry a smaller/lighter camera about but still want excellent picture quality.

Excellent choice all in all thumbup

Anyone with any views on the Nikon D40 as an alternative? I'm considering both of these cameras at present.

I know what your saying, and too be honest I doubt I will even notice any problems with that lens anyway, until I know what to look for!

yeah, I was also looking at the Nikon D40, it did beat the Canon in a group test in 'What Digital Camera' magazine, but this were purely down to a superior lens.

They've removed the AF motor from the body on D40, so it can only autofocus on certain lenses. This really puts me off it. I'd personally go for 400D.

Why on earth did they do that. Seems like a pretty silly thing to do if you can only autofocus with certain lenses. Seems like a shot in the foot to me confused

I'm also thinking of buying a 400D

DigitalRev have one quite cheap with the lens (and in London as opposed to some of their ones in Hong Kong), this way you could think about getting another lens or a tripod or some other equipment.

Have a fiddle with one, I found the Canon just didn't 'feel' right in my hands, whilst the Nikon 'felt' right.

I doubt there is much in it of terms of quality and ability.

Seem to be plenty of happy customers who have brought them from there. £50 would buy some memory cards etc..

Cost cutting solution, maybe? I'm not sure either.

Yeah that's a better idea. Amazon have pretty good value cards - you could get a Sandisk 4gb Extreme 3 card for about £45

I went through all this a month ago - see this thread.

I ended up with a D40 which I love - I'm a beginner and a student so the need and wedge to buy extra lenses is sadly lacking at the moment, which means the outboard lens motor doesn't bother me rotate

I'm going to Paris at the weekend, so I'll post some more of my efforts next week.

If your not happy with a D40, get a D50 - a brill camera for beginners with the motor.

IMO one of the beuties with dSLR's is the cheap(ish) catalog of older lenses, especialy primes, which wont work with the d40.

400D is an ace camera and a few steps above the d40 (d80 comparable).

Ok, its been ordered, the 400D is on its way and I can't wait to take my first shots. I hope it comes Saturday, but might not be until Monday.
Hopefully I will soon be able to post some half decent shots up on here.

Thanks for all the advice.

Will.

Seems a very odd idea to me, it's supposed to be a budget camera but you can't use any budget lenses with it. confused
