This must be very easy but as I'm crap with Photoshop, I need some PH assistance please.

I'm trying to remove a white background from a logo, turning the white part transparent. I know I can use the rubber tool and rub it all out (spending hours to go around the tricy bits), but there must be an easier way?

I've got as far as 'colour select' and managed to select everything white (deselecting the white bits i don't want to lose) but I'm lost from there. I've looked for the handy 'turn selection transparent' button or similar but I'm stuck now.

I bet it's easy so could someone put me out of my misery.

Cheers
L

Trouble is the white background is always there no matter what I do. I've even rebuilt the logo out of separate layers getting rid of all the background, but when I flatten the layers it puts a white background in. It's a work thing, we need a transparent one for many things ideally in jpeg. I said to one of the girls, "Don't worry I've got photoshop at home, I'll do it in a jiffy"

Probably better off masking it. Easiest way assuming it's a difficult shape is to draw a path around it, then select from that.

Once you've selected the area you want to remove, just hit delete. If you copy the background layer and do the select and delete thing on the copy, you're then free to fill the original backround with any colour you want.

For the initial selection, you could try the magic wand (easy) or the path tool (accurate).

Sorry - I think all our replies arrived together. Don't flatten the image, use 'merge visible'.

JPEG doesn't support transparancy does it? Thought it had to be GIF for that? If not, I'll just shut up

Can you save a clipping path with a Jpeg? I'm not near a copy at the moment, so I can't check, but it might be worth reading the Photoshop Help on the subject.

Ahh that's made it easier...

Merge visible & saved as a GIF instead of a JPEG.

Thanks all, pints on me, see you in the pub later

I'm a bit late to this thread, but you might want to have a look at Cybia AlphaWorks

Hang on... scratchchin Don't you just need to select all teh white (magic wand?) and erase it? Then there won't be anything on that layer...

...or am I missing something?

Edited to add - Ah - now I've read ALL the thread ! Ignore me!!

(But it took less than 30 secs...)
