which dvd software?

I have a hitachi dvd/cam, and I want to copy the disc onto my computer and then burn to a dvd.
okay, thats simple I hear you say, but I have no idea what is needed.
the camera does not plug in to the computer via a cable, I finalise the disc in the camera, then put into the computer, what I think I need is the right software to transfer the film and enable me to then put it onto a dvd, also would like to be able to convert the format and put films up on the internet ect, I hope this makes sense to someone and would like to know what is a good simple to use software to buy.
