Well a bit of background. Love photography and love looking at photographs (some excellent examples on here) but I have only recently started to take it more seriously.. wondering around finding interesting and inspiring places.. which is pretty difficult in my oppinion.

I used to use (and still own) a basic point and shoot Sony Cybershot DSC-W50.. which was ample at the time but I just wanted to progress and better my self at the hobby. So I went and brought a Fuji Finepix S9600 Camera. Its basically an SLR, only difference being you cannot remove the lense, its fixed. Although I have little knowledge of cameras, albeit learning all the time, I think its a fantastic peice of kit, only problem being, I have a very basic understanding of how to use it. Im getting to grips and am more confident with some manual settings such as shutter speed and aperture and ISO but things such as depth of field still puzzle me on how to achieve this.

I was recommend to post in here by R5GTTGAZ, saying that I can get all the comments and help I need to improve my work.

Here's some photographs of a friends Seat Leon Cupra R (not to everyones tastes I know) I took on the first day of owning the camera.. I now can see some are a little dark ect and a bit of photoshop wouldn't go amiss but thought I would post the images without any editing.

I also went to a my car club meet (lincstorque.com) which was a Jap only meet, well technically although we got one or two mixed bags turn up.

Mines Skyline R32 GTR - Cool !

Rest are here http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v59

I know they're not very special.. but I would like comments from you guys/gals on how I can better take photos of cars at these meets and how to do a photoshoots for cars.. as well as camera settings I should use.. this was on fully auto mode that day.

Can't wait to read replys, be easy on me!

James

I like the first set a lot more than the second ones

Second set first then ...I'm not a fan of skewed shots unless they are something "special", and in the second photo, I'm not sure what the subject is, the bike or the car bonnet, neither of which is particularly "standout".

You've also got posts growing out of the roof of the cars!

In the first set, you have found yourself some very nice locations. Tick box one. The photos themselves seem a little over exposed to me and could have benefited from being a bit sharper. Were you using a tripod?

Although I can see that you wanted to fit the shape of the tunnel in the first two, the subject vehicle is thus a little small in the frame, and some detail is lost. In fact, if I'm being very picky, I think that the car would have benefited from some lighting on it in each of the photos.

I'm not sure that I like all the lense flares. I assume that you didn't add them afterwards? Maybe just a few might have been better?

I think that Number 5 is my favourite, although it might have been nice to haveturned the wheels slightly to follow the arrow and suggest movement?

Agree totally with CY88. Really like the first set. Especially the tunnel - it's a perfect location. Where did you focus? It does seem slightly soft on the car itself, which loses all the detail unfortauntely. Get yoruself a tripod, consider the lighting (as its a dark car it doesn't help) and that would be spot on shots!

The second set's worst enemy is the street light poking out the top, it distracts heavily. Some nice ideas, and you're getting down low looking at it from the right angles too!

(I say this as a COMPLETE amateur, by the way!)

Thanks
Tony

Nice work

With these kinda' cars it's location location location and I think the tunnel is great. www.mattwatkinson.com (from this place) chooses locations very carefully (I know, I spent 2 hours in the driving rain to get one) and I'm sure if he wasn't lying on a beach would say 'see the photo' (or some such clever talk). If you get the right backdrop, the car will fit in perfectly.

Thanks for the replies. I have a few things from the replies that I can think about, and I do agree location is a large influence to a photograph..

Thankyou

Is the tunnel the one under the University bridge and is the multi storey car park the one on Broadgate it doesn't look like Lucy Tower street?

The shots look good in the tunnel whereas the multi-storey shots look a bit hidey-boo on the down ramp it would maybe look better set diagonally on one of the main levels or outside on the top level. Maybe with the Cathedral in the background (if you can see it from there!)
Well done.
