Any recommendations? I hear the £100 sigmas loose it at the top end of zoom.

Thanks,

Avoid the non-apo Sigma certainly. Lots of Chromatic abberation. That said the Apo sigma is within budget and significantly better, best in class. Tamron SD is similar, but just loses out in most tests. Nikkor stuff will cost a lot more, I'd avoid unless you value the brand. I am biased btw, I love the sigma apo for the money. 1:2 Macro is brill too.

The other thing I'd consider is a S/H Nikon 80-200 F2.8 Nikkor. THe older, one-touch version goes for around £250 upwards. It's a fantastic lens, if a little heavy!

We have the APO Sigma (paid about £250 for it- may be less nowadays) it does the job, slow on the AF when its full zoom, easier to use the manual, obviously it makes it dark, but for the money its good enough

I was just going to post a question similar to the one in this topic. I've just bought a second hand D70 and have a 28-70 lens already but wanted something to enable me to take pictures of boats and things in the river near my house. Will the Sigma lenses already talked about do the job?

Depends on the specific, light, distance etc. The 70-300 will give a decent close zoom and give a nice depth of field on most days. Should be ample I would of thought. Is there anyone you can borrow a lens from? Where abouts are you?

Failing that buy something s/h of ebay and if it doesn't work out for you sell it on for what you paid for it.

Other option may be Tamron 28-300. May be a bit slow, but I've found it a good all-rounder for the money

I had the APO Sigma until recently when I brought a IS lens.

I found it was one of the best in class when I was looking around. Was happy with it.

Buy it.
