The first few shots from Vietnam. Little processing done - just crop and sharpen - and not technically great, but put up more for amusement...

First, a guessing game - which side of the road do they drive on?!?

And next, some idea of the transport they use. The best photo is on THIS thread...still not sure what it was.

Other stuff:-

Well, it's a truck. But don't ask who made it. And where's the rest of the engine, let alone the bodywork?

Unbalanced rider?!?

And I think this is one of Hondas new panniers...

Edit: All taken through glass from inside moving vehicles, so apologies for quality.

Is the first one the new road into Hanoi from the airport?

Hope you had a good trip. Best I saw was six people on a moped, Mother, Father, two kids on the foot plate and the mother (not driving!) had a baby under each arm!

Also the beer (ba ba ba!) delivery consisted of another moped with three barrels on the back, one on the footplate. Also saw a guy with a large chest freezer on the back. Great fun!

Brings back memories!!

Again, some of the following aren't the best quality cos they were taken thru bus windows etc...
I'm assuming the oil drums are empty!

Apparently the pigs are drugged for the journey to the market and if the dose isn't enough they've been known to wake up too soon while still on the moped yikes

The road is the Hanoi - Halong Bay (& Haiphong, I guess) main road. Had to take a pic as the artic' truck is the one overtaking the van overtaking the moped!

I also saw a family (4 only) on a moped. As well as a chest-freezer and some pigs being carried (not on same bike), what looked like a cubic metre of chickens (new measure! ), and one woman with a shrubbery in each side-pannier!

Real eye-opening stuff, as was the amount those little old women could carry on those sticks over their shoulders (Pratchett was spot on: "the entire economy is based around the carrying ability of little old women". Very interesting place, a little disappointed with some of my pics as much of the interesting stuff I saw from behind the glass of a moving vehicle. That and Halong Bay being closed-in and rainy when we were there (atmospheric...like something from Sir ACD's "The Lost World"...expected a pterosaur to fly over any minute...but not the spectacle you get in the adverts for it...shame!).

It really is a fantastic place, but I can share your feelings about halong bay - amazing place, but it's always overcast (as is most of the north) so the chances of getting the polariser out are quite slim. However it's all worth it for the crazy sights and sounds. Would love to go again someday.

Havoc even though you shot through glass you should be able to get some depth back into the shots with the levels in photoshop

Duncan,

Even misty and (following morning) rainy, it was still a great experience - fish eagles flying overhead, monkeys hooting, the floating village, the sheer ethereality of it with the short-visibility. But not quite so photogenic as blue skies and verdant greenery (tautology alert!)!

...when i've got them sorted and tidied, I'll post some of my best photos up!

Nick,

Would that I had photoshop...I'm making-do with PaintShop Pro v.8, and I'm not an expert with it, either. Any suggestions?

Look forward to seeing them.
Halong Bay was also covered in low cloud when we were there - has ANYONE seen the sun there?!
