Hello chaps,

For reasons that aren't important, I have to go to Tokyo for a few days next week.

Are Cannon DSLRs noticably cheaper in the land of the rising sun? If so, I may be tempted to pick something up...

Don't know what make you intend to get, however at the current exchange rate I'd say yes they are cheaper.

However things to bear in mind if you're getting Canon (Unfortunately don't know much about Nikon);
1) Lenses carry a 1 year worldwide warranty
2) Camera bodies carry a 1 year warranty in the country of purchase ONLY
3) Sigma can be iffy over international warranties

So in summary I'd say take the hit and get the body here, but buy lenses while you're out there

(I'm off there in July and will be picking up a 70-200 F2.8L IS)

They are considerably cheaper in Japan.

I don't know what you are after but and example is the new Canon 1D Mark III, £2999 in the UK, £2000 in Japan.

I think I'm looking at the other end of the DSLR market....

Thanks for the heads up from all, I'll have a hunt about when I'm out there. Pretty sure I'm looking for a 400D and an 18-55 lens.

Make sure you use a credit/debit card because you get a lot better exchange rate than you would with cash (some smaller shops charge for using a card though so check this out first). Also, its actually cheaper to exchange cash out there as well, so take some of the queens money. Also, in most shops like biccamera you can get 10-15% back, of the price of the camera/whatever to spend in that shop, and if you happen to have a Japanese guide or such with you you can buy vouchers that allow you to claim the 5% tax back. Unfortunately you cant have the 10-15% AND the tax back so choose whichever is best for you.

Hope you have a good time, even if it is for just 2 days! Such a waste, hehe.

Cheers
Tom

PS: Git! I want to be back there!
