OK, I asked the ladies and gentlemen here for advice a few weeks back. I have digested what was said and made a choice.

I want a 400D with a basic 18-55mm lens to start with I think.

So, this seems almost too cheap;

What am I missing? (I know it'll be a non euro camera, and it's probably not the fastest data card in the universe).

I was in the same boat as you, and took the plunge on the exact same package.

Arrived a copule of days after I ordered it. It is not a UK camera (I dont thin kanyway) but it does have UK menus, manuals etc...

The card, yes, is a bit slow. But at that price, you cannot complain really.

In early May, Tesco had them on sale for £399:97 (excluding Canon discount) so it isn't really stupidly cheap.

Missed that one. Currently 500 notes (I guess minus 50 rebate)

and the 350D for £239 the previous week.

It is a good idea to keep an eye on this site, all sorts of camera/computer bargains get reported by the members http://www.hotukdeals.com/forums/showthread.php?t=...

Given that the 18-55 kit lens isn't the best lens in the world, you can get them pretty cheap off eBay (last one sold for £26 +£2P&P), I'd consider the £399 body only from Camera World, plus you'll get £50 cash back giving a total price of £349 for the body, then buy a lens of your choice. (If you bought the kit one off eBay you'll have then forked out about £380)

Look here for good pricing.

I quite like the support given by the local Jessops, and can usually squeeze a discount out of them. Only managed £10 off web price 10 days ago, disappointing but worth asking the question. I thought I had managed £429.99 ("if you can do it at that price you've got a deal" I said, hoping that the assistant was not the sharpest tool in the box. Turns out the shelf price was after the cashback. Could be worth trying elsewhere to see if a trainee will give you the after cashback price on the till though, and then claim the £50 back)

All excellent suggestions. I shall watch various things like a hawk and swoop when the price/time/mouse* is right.....

If the standard lens isn't much cop - what might be a superior suggestion for a rank amateur?

  • Go with the analogy.

Hi Mr. E,

I bought a 400D just last week and I've very pleased with it.... especially after I got an EOS to T2 converter so that I could use my older lenses. I did think of going the ebay route as they did seem cheaper, but eventually bought it in a local Wilkinsons store... managed to wrangle another £10 off too. With ebay some of the cameras are new and some are refurbished, which is fine but you never know why they were refurbished in the first place. It might have been a one off technical failure that has been fixed.. or it could be that the camera was dropped and while the original problem has been fixed there could be secondary issues... it's the gamble you take I guess!?! Plus there's the issue over whether or not you can use the warranty in the UK ???

Anyway... was originally posting to let you know that the £50 cash back offer ends at the end of this month I think... (30-6-07) and I don't know if that date is for purchase or for sending the offer back to canon?? So don't spend too long looking, buy and have some fun smile
