On doing a quick search here the Epsom R300 came up as a PH favorite although that was time ago. As time and technology has now moved on is this still the case or is there some new kid on the block I should be looking at?
Have no buget in mind, would prefer to spend a little more to get something that's going to last.

Krusty, I'd totally recommend the Epson printers, as far as I'm concerned they give the best results for photographs, which one you go for depends on your budget but I'd say get the best you can from their range.

First of all it would be best to define exactly what you want really. Is A4 big enough or do you want bigger or smaller? I use a Canon i9950 for example for 19x13 inch prints. Frankly, this subject is rather like the Rolex/Omega arguments and I don't think that there is much between either Canon or Epson. It has mostly been accepted that Epson are better at B & W but now Canon have brought out the Pixma 9500 with grey and black cartridges perhaps the balance has been redressed. It is an expensive printer though - semi pro. To help you make your choice go here to see the reviews:-

if you are happy with A4 then consider Canon Pixma iP6700D or epson R360 (both dye inks). for A3+ printers then you have the R2400, R1800 from epson, the HP B9180 the new canon PIXMA Pro9000. the 9500 is rather expensive compared to the alternative epson and HP printers however. the pro9000 is dye while the others are pigment.

Cheers Dogsey, was an Epson that I had in mind.
Lowdrag, I'll be mostly printing 6x4 but want to be able to print A4. not often bigger

To be honest the Epson R1800 is what I'd had in mind

As a comment on your above, try using 7x5 instead of 6x4 paper. You'll be surprised at the difference in the detail. Hope you have fun with your printer.
