Panning Photos Feedback Required
Discussion
I've posted my first ever attempts at panning on the Photo Of The Month thread in the hope that I could gain some feedback on how to improve the shots.
Please have a look at the shots on this thread and I'd really welcome any
comments on what I should be doing to improve these.

Here is just one of them and thanks in advance for any feedback, tips you
care to offer.

What lens was one using?
Also can you tell me the settings that you used?
should be able to get this from the Exif data embedded within the Jpeg image.
To get this, go to the image, right click it then properties, summary, advance.
The information displayed there is the exif.
David - will get back to you tomorrow.

Nikon D40
2007/06/03 14:44:02.8
JPEG (8-bit) Normal
Image Size: Large (3008 x 2000)
Color
Lens: 55-200mm F/4-5.6 G
Focal Length: 55mm
Exposure Mode: Shutter Priority
Metering Mode: Multi-Pattern
1/50 sec - F/7.1
Exposure Comp.: 0 EV
Sensitivity: ISO 200
1/50 sec - F/7.1 seems a bad starting point. To slow a shutter.
This was 1/125th at 300mm at a track day. So going fast but coming out of a corner so not uber speeds.

1/160th but on a straight so faster speeds.

Try starting panning at about 1/250th and then start getting slower (1/125th say?) as you get better.
Obviously the slower the cars going the slower shutter speed you will need if you wish to create a lot of blur.
I believe that you've used to long a shutter speed (more time for error) and thus to much movement has come into play.
Practice your panning technique. following through while panning, don't stop for the shot, keep the panning movement.
Also maybe hold the shutter button down and take a few shots. This way the 1st and last may be crap but the middle shot may be nice and clean. You can always delete the bad shots later.
Then you can also pan with a tripod or a monopod but that's another thread...
David - my 2pence anyway.
