Sorry, bit of a 'beginners' question I'm afraid! I'm looking at getting a digital SLR, and was wondering if it's possible to use 35mm SLR lenses on them?

Does anybody know of the best place to buy a digital SLR from, and what would be the best camera for me. My budget would only be around £300-350 ideally, and I'd like something that is ready to use (i.e it's got all of the bits needed).

Any help appreciated.

www.warehouseexpress.com

I swear by them, and have spent thousands with them.

Excellent customer service, too - for when things go wrong/you're not happy for any reason.

my advice woul dbe to go into your local jessops and play with the camera, see what you think feels right and most of all ignore what the sales person tells you lol. then visit http://www.camerapricebuster.co.uk/ and find the cheapest. you'll need to get a memory card too but they are only about £20 for a 2gig card. you can get a Pentax Pentax K100D + 18-55mm Lens for £300, Canon EOS 350D Lens Kit (EF-S 18-55mm) for £358, Nikon D50 Lens Kit (AF-S DX 18-55mm) for £300 at current prices.

Yes you can use 35mm lenses, but most DSLRs change the effective length of the lens...

so a 70 - 300 would end up as (roughly) a 105 - 450.

Older lenses may not have all the functionality of a new DSLR specific lens. This is where jessops is useful, take the lens in and ask what will work and what won't. (And then buy from WarehouseExpress!)

Whilst technically the above is right, it does depend on the mounting on the lense too. And of course even some lenses designed for digital cameras have the problem of magnifying the image. Its all to do with the size of the CCD not being the same size as 35mm film so they have to focus the image onto a smaller size, but of course they dont do that so you only get a fraction of the focused image recorded. This of course then looks magnified when printed at the same size as a 35mm taken photo.

Do you already have some lenses? If so, what mount are they? That might influence your choice of camera system.

Thanks for all of the advice everyone.

I do have a lense. All I know about it is that it's a Sigma 100-300mm. At the moment it's fitted to my Pentax MZ-30 camera. If I could get a camera that this lense would work with it would obviously be a huge bonus- I'm afraid that's as in depth as my knowledge gets!

Not sure about this. I have just had a Canon EOS 400D delivered to replace my 'old' EOS 300. The 400D has the EFS 18-55 lens and the 300 has a EF 28-80 lens.
I took a photo of a painting on the wall with the the 400D and its standard lens. To make the painting fill the viewfinder the lens was at 45. The painting also filled the frame when previewed on the LCD screen.
I then fitted the 28-80 lens to the 400D and took the same photo from the same position. The '300' lens on the 400D was also at 45 (but with the 1.6 multiplier was actually a 72 lens?) for the painting to fill the viewfinder. The painting also filled the frame when previewed on the LCD screen. So all the focused image was record.

Not sure if that confirms or disproves your statement??? However, none of the focused image was missing, although it would have been if the '300' lens had been set at 72 - the equivalent of the 400D lens at 45. Is this what you meant?

Bought my 400D from www.EmpireDirect.co.uk for £497 with a discount code that gave me 10% off, £50 cash-back from Canon and a free 2nd & 3rd year warranty from Empiredirect.

Anyone want a Canon EOS 300 with a EF 28-80 USM lens?

The Pentax MZ-30 uses the KAF2 lens mount, so if the Sigma 100-300 fits the MZ-30, then it should also fit the current Pentax DSLR bodies.

Is this the lens? http://www.onestop-digital.com/catalog/product_inf...

If so, it costs over £500 new, so worth thinking about keeping!

Thanks, don't think it's the same lense- think mine was around £200 about five years ago (a 21st birthday present).

This is the lense- don't know if anybody can help identify it....

Hi, last question I promise. I think this is probably the best bet for me; http://www.jessops.com/Store/s35905/0/Digital-SLRs...

Does anybody know if my lens will fit this camera?

Thanks again

Depends what the lens is. All my old Nikon Lenses fit my Nikon DSLRs, as they have the same fit. You need to find out what fit the DSLR is and work out if that's what you have.

Looking at the link, it says it works with KAF2 mount lenses, and your film camera has a KAF2 mount, so one would assume so...

Well it says that it uses a Pentax KAF lens mount, and as I'm not an expert I wanted to make sure that there wasn't major diferences between a KAF and a KAF2 fitting (that you said my current camera uses).

I'm afraid I've never owned or used Pentax gear, so I can't give you the definitive answer. Maybe try dpreview.com - they've probably got a Pentax forum with members who could answer you completely.
