Nikon D80 or D40X
Discussion
This is probably been asked before, but i'm wanting a didgy camera and not sure which one. A m8 has a Nikon D50 which I like. However, noticed the above 2 models. My questions are. Is there a big difference between the two regarding specification. I know they are both 10 mg pix, but is the extra £200 worth it for the D80? Is the D40X the D50 replacement and if so, is it as good?
The D40X comes with a 18-55 lens and the D80 with a 18-135.
Someone suggested also a Canon 30D.

THe D80 is a better size, fits the hand better - but the main thing is the D40X doesn't have an AF drive motor so can only user (expensive) nikon AF-S lenses. You can kiss good bye to Tamron, nearly all sigma and cheaper/older nikon lenses.
D80's worth the extra I'd say, esp if the 200 includes the fancy lens.
Canon may be okay, but I'm a nikon fan and it's getting long in the tooth now.

It was even cheaper in Dixons at Stansted Airport last week - £580 with the 18-135 lens. I didn't like the feel of the lends though, it seemed far to cheap and plastic. The D200 was £710 body only. I would recommend trying the 18(?)-85 lens.
Ordered the D80 for £610. Not £621.Theres also a Canon 30D with 18 - 55 (I think) lens fot £15 more. Hope I've made the right choice.

Just wanted to say "hi" Mick - Hope all is well?
Good to see you over here - I'm currently on a steep learning curve here myself.

I am good thanks. I used to do photography years ago with Contax stuff, but knew to Didgy...hence the thread.
Hope you are well.

Be good to catch up sometime - Would be good to see you out with your Cerb and new camera on a Driving Adventure!

Bought the Nikon D80 with the 18-135 zoom. I think its excellent. However. The shots I have put on my pc dont seam as sharp as my 5M Sony compact camera that i've had for some time. I've got everything set to 'large' and 'fine', so just wondered why.
Also. do other uses set the ISO tp 100..or slightly higher?

I use ISO of 200 - 400 in normal use (although I use 100 if the conditions allow).
It could be a simple case of 'camera shake' - make sure you're using an appropriate shutter speed - IIRC the general rule is 'minimum speed equal to the lens' (focal length used). (unless you're using a tripod, of course)
Therefore, for your lens at the 18mm setting, you should not use a speed lower than 1/20th (in practice, I'd never shoot hand-held lower than 1/25th at a wide-angle setting anyway.
For longer zoom settings, use at least 1/250th.
Hope this helps.

I'll try using it on 200/400 ISO, and that hopefully will help towards any camera shake that mite be there.
