At least I think it's the D70. The entry level DSLR from a year or so ago.

Anyway, it's for my girlfriend's father. I think he wants something 'general purpose' but with a bit of zoom on it. He just has the kit lens at the moment.

Any recommendations much appreciated.

The kit lens that usually arrived with the D70 (18-55 IIRC) is a 'general purpose' lens.

The next lens to get would probably be the 70-300. This is good for wildlife, portraits and motorsport.

There are two types: the 'G' and the 'D'. To be honest the G is fine and a lot cheaper, but not so well made. The D has marginally better optics and can be used manually.

Both are often found on E Bay.

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/NEW-nikon-ZOOM-nikkor-AF-70-... (£70 inc P£P) cheaper from Hong Kong.

I've just bought a D70s and was looking at lenses on e bay, are the HK ones a scam or genuine?

The lens that was supplied was the 18-70 IIRC.
The D50 was supplied with an 17-55. I have a D50 with the supplied 17-55, and I added a 55-200 Nikon lens. This was around £100.
