I was in a branch of maplins on sat. They are doing usb external hard drives, 320gb for £59.99.

I'm quite shocked how cheap they are now

You know its very easy to get the pictures back even if you've formatted the HD (afaik)

My sis did it and some nerd got all the info back again.

Nothing is actually deleted until its written over again. Its just made invisible and rewritable.

I've got around 200gb of stuff backed up online with them for £40ish a year.

YES ABSOLUTELY.

HD's are a major PITA.
It is going to be a very real problem for music, movie and photography over the next few years.
Drives fail fairly regularly and unpredictably.

Backup regularly to other mediums and keep a check on latest formats. Obsolete formats will become a very dodgy issue.

Should see our machine room. I need a piece of software and a pot of coffee everyday just to keep track of it all!

Still have panics every now and again.

buy two - back it up once a month, take one to the office and leave it there, repeat every month.

Even if your house goes on fire you've still only lost a maximum of a months worth of data.

I got one of these, 500 gig for 60 quid can't be bad, usb not firewire so not the fastest kid off the blocks but does the job.

Should have got two as suggested.

How long will the ink and polycarbonate last though?

Only way to be safe is to have multiple backups on different formats in different locations.
Making use of online accessed server based storage is a good idea.
